The next morning, Mia woke up feeling… nervous.
Not just normal nerves. Heart-flutter, stomach-turning, slightly panicked nerves.
She had never felt this way about anyone. Except Daniel. But now, Daniel felt small. And Ethan… Ethan felt like chaos mixed with chocolate.
Mia flopped onto her bed dramatically, staring at her ceiling. “I hate this,” she whispered.
Carla popped up on her video call immediately. “You’ve been saying that for six hours.”
“I mean it this time,” Mia said. “I can’t stop thinking about Ethan.”
Carla’s eyes widened. “Wait. Are you serious? THE Ethan Reyes?”
“The one who teases me all the time,” Mia muttered, pulling the blanket over her head.
Carla laughed. “He’s your brother’s best friend! He’s also the sweetest boy alive! You’re in love!”
“I am NOT in love,” Mia said, though her cheeks were already red.
“Yeah… keep telling yourself that.”
By the time Mia got to school, she felt jittery and self-conscious. Every hallway, every locker, every step seemed like it might explode into chaos. And, of course, it did.
She spotted Ethan at his locker. Calm. Casual. Completely unaware of the storm in her head.
Mia tried to walk past him quietly. Fail number one: her backpack strap caught on the locker door, swinging her into Ethan.
He caught her by the shoulders. “Whoa, careful there,” he said.
She stumbled back, her cheeks flaming. “I… I’m fine!”
He raised an eyebrow. “Sure you are. Totally fine.”
Mia muttered something under her breath about gravity being unfair.
Ethan smirked. “Still blaming gravity, huh?”
She rolled her eyes and walked away. Almost tripped over Daniel in the process.
Daniel Cruz, the boy who ignored her messages, now looked very concerned. “Mia, you okay?”
“I… I’m fine,” she said quickly.
Daniel frowned. “You don’t sound fine.”
“I’m… fine!” she insisted.
He opened his mouth to say more, but Mia sprinted toward class, tripping slightly in the process. Ethan caught her again.
She gasped. “STOP! You’re ruining my dignity!”
“Sure,” he said, holding back a grin. “Because dignity is your strong point.”
Mia groaned. “Why did you even come to school today?”
“I go to school every day,” he said like it was obvious.
Mia pinched the bridge of her nose. “I need a life insurance policy for my dignity.”
By the time the first bell rang, Mia was exhausted, her heart still racing. And somehow, Ethan’s presence made every step, every glance, every small conversation feel heavier… and sweeter.

Morning Class Chaos
Mia’s first class was Chemistry. The teacher, Mr. Tan, was famous for explosions.
Today, he wanted the students to do a baking soda volcano experiment.
Mia was nervous. Experiments were her kryptonite.
She paired with Carla and got her beakers ready. Ethan was across the room with his lab partner, casually setting up his experiment.
Carla whispered, “You’ve got this. Just don’t explode the classroom.”
“I will try,” Mia said, glancing at Ethan.
As usual, Mia didn’t just “try.” She accidentally knocked the vinegar bottle off the table. It fell on the floor and spilled everywhere.
Ethan, noticing, rushed over immediately. “Mia! Step back!”
Too late. The mixture erupted like a mini volcano, spilling over onto her lab partner’s notebook.
“OOOH!” Carla screamed, half in horror, half in laughter.
The class erupted into chaos. Mr. Tan sighed. “Mia Santos…”
Mia shrank. “Yes… sir…”
Ethan helped clean up, staying calm, handing her paper towels. His hands brushed hers, and Mia felt her heart jump.
“Thanks,” she muttered.
“No problem,” he said softly, looking straight at her.
And just like that, Mia almost forgot the spilled vinegar, the ruined notebook, and her general embarrassment.

Lunchroom Drama
By lunch, Mia hoped things would calm down. They did not.
The cafeteria was crowded, full of students laughing, shouting, and spilling drinks everywhere.
She spotted Daniel across the room, waving her over.
Mia approached hesitantly.
“Hey,” Daniel said. “Sorry about yesterday… I was busy.”
Mia blinked. “Two words. Six hours.”
He looked guilty. “I know. I… I messed up.”
Before she could respond, a tray of spaghetti fell nearby. The noodles slid across the floor, hitting her backpack. Mia shrieked, then slipped slightly.
Ethan, who had been walking by, grabbed her arm to steady her.
“Careful,” he said, smiling faintly.
Daniel frowned. “Who’s that?”
Mia’s face turned red. “He… he’s… nothing!”
Ethan smirked at Daniel. “Hi.”
Daniel stared. “Oh. Hi.”
Mia wanted to hide under the table.

Afternoon Detention… By Accident
As if the morning and lunch weren’t enough, Mia got a note from Mr. Tan: detention for spilling chemicals and causing minor chaos.
Carla groaned. “You’re famous now. Congrats.”
Mia didn’t want to think about it. She trudged to detention room.
And, of course, Ethan was there too.
He had been caught joking around in another class.
She sat down heavily.
“You’re everywhere today,” she whispered.
“Seems like fate,” he said softly, handing her a pencil.
She took it and muttered a dramatic, “I’m doomed.”
Ethan chuckled quietly. “You’ll survive.”
Mia didn’t know if he was teasing or serious.
Either way, she felt her heart beat faster than normal.

The Confession of Small Moments
Detention dragged on, but Ethan kept checking on her.
“Do you need more paper?”
“Want water?”
“Careful with that ruler—it’s sharp.”
By the end of detention, Mia felt… different. Her embarrassment and panic mixed with warmth.
Maybe… maybe she liked him more than she should.
Maybe… maybe he liked her.

Walking Home
After school, Mia and Ethan walked out together.
The sun was low, warm, casting long shadows.
Mia tried to act casual. Failed.
Ethan noticed. “You’re quiet.”
“I… I’m just tired,” she said.
“From what?” he asked.
“From… school.”
He smirked. “Or from tripping and spilling things?”
Mia groaned. “You… you’re impossible.”
He laughed softly. “But you survived the day.”
Mia looked down. “Barely.”
They walked in silence for a few moments. Then, Ethan spoke again.
“You know… if someone treated you badly… you should never feel small.”
Mia’s stomach did that weird flutter thing again.
“I know,” she said softly.
“And,” he added, “if someone ignores you… maybe it’s better to notice someone who actually cares.”
Mia turned to him. “You mean…?”
He smiled faintly, calm and teasing at the same time.
“Yes,” he said.
Her heart raced.
And she realized something important.
The wrong text had been a mistake. But maybe…
It was the best mistake of her life.
