The bridge stage

914 Words
Amara felt her heart sink as she stood quietly at the back of the crowded auditorium. One by one, talented students walked onto the stage, singing, dancing, acting, and showing incredible skills. The audience clapped loudly after every performance, making Amara feel even smaller. She lowered her head and hugged her sketchbook tightly against her chest. “Maybe I shouldn’t have come,” she whispered to herself. The judges were busy discussing the performances while volunteers prepared the stage for the next contestant. Amara slowly stepped backward, hoping nobody would notice her standing alone. She was just about to leave when one of the judges looked in her direction. “Hey, little girl,” the judge called with a warm smile. Amara looked around in confusion before pointing at herself. “Are… are you talking to me?” “Yes,” another judge replied. “Come over here.” Every student nearby turned to look at her. Amara swallowed nervously before walking toward the judges with slow, careful steps. “What is your name?” one of them asked kindly. “My name is Amara Bennett,” she answered softly. “I’m from Gilbert High School.” The judges exchanged quick glances before smiling. “Well, Amara,” the head judge said, “why don’t you come up here and show us what you’ve got?” Amara’s eyes widened. “M-Me?” “Yes, you.” Her heart began pounding so hard she thought everyone could hear it. Oh my God… why me? Her hands became cold, and her knees felt weak. What if I mess up? What if everyone laughs at me? She looked at the large audience. Hundreds of faces stared back at her. For a brief moment, she wanted to run away. She took a deep breath and remembered the words her father had always told her. “You’ll never know what you’re capable of unless you try.” Amara slowly nodded. “I… I’ll do it.” The audience became quiet as she walked onto the stage. The bright lights shone directly on her face, making it difficult to see the crowd clearly. She stood in the center of the stage, her hands shaking slightly. One of the judges smiled encouragingly. “Take your time. There’s no rush.” Amara closed her eyes for a few seconds and took another deep breath. Then, without saying a word, she reached into her bag and carefully pulled out her sketchbook. A few students in the audience looked confused. “Is she going to draw?” someone whispered. “How is that a talent?” another student asked. Ignoring the whispers, Amara opened her sketchbook to a blank page. She picked up a pencil and began drawing. The auditorium became silent except for the gentle sound of her pencil moving across the paper. Her hand moved with surprising speed and confidence. Every line seemed effortless. The judges leaned forward with interest. After several minutes, Amara stepped away from the drawing and turned it around for everyone to see. A loud gasp echoed through the auditorium. The sketch showed the entire stage exactly as it looked at that moment—the judges, the audience, the lights, even the smallest details on the curtains. It looked so realistic that it could easily be mistaken for a photograph. The audience stared in amazement. “Wow…” “She drew all of that just now?” “That’s unbelievable!” One judge stood up from his seat. “Extraordinary.” Another judge smiled brightly. “You have incredible talent, Amara.” The audience burst into loud applause. Amara blinked in surprise. They were clapping… For her. A smile slowly appeared on her face as happy tears filled her eyes. For the first time in a long while, she felt proud of herself. The applause grew even louder. Some students stood to their feet, cheering for her. “Bravo!” “She’s amazing!” The head judge raised his microphone. “Talent isn’t always about singing or dancing. Sometimes, true talent is the ability to create something that leaves people speechless.” He smiled warmly at Amara. “And today, that’s exactly what you did.” Amara bowed politely. “Thank you,” she said, her voice trembling with emotion. As she walked off the stage, she noticed a familiar face standing near the side entrance. It was the student who had overheard her singing at school the day before. The girl smiled and gave Amara a thumbs-up. “You were incredible.” Amara smiled back shyly. “Thank you.” Just then, another judge approached her. “Amara Bennett,” he said, holding a small envelope. “We would like you to return tomorrow for the final round of the competition.” Amara froze. “The… final round?” “Yes.” “You’ve earned your place.” For a moment, she couldn’t believe what she had heard. She had come to the competition expecting to watch from the sidelines. Instead, she had been invited to compete in the finals. Clutching the envelope tightly, Amara looked toward the stage one last time. A few minutes ago, she had been scared to take a single step forward. Now, she was walking away with a chance to prove herself even more. As she left the auditorium with a hopeful smile, she whispered to herself, ”Maybe… this was the first step toward showing everyone who Amara Bennett really was.
