Destined mates

Chapter Two

It was the beginning of August and only a week since Peter and Chris left. Charlotte none stopped talked about Chris and how she would get to keep him when she grew up. Her happy little face brought a smile to Walter and Audrey's faces.

Walter had business to attend to in his office, so Audrey took the girls out to play with the other pack children. All the mums sat in the shade drinking ice tea and talking while the children all played together.

'Walter!' he heard as he answered his office phone. Walter knew it was Frank, the alpha from Hilltop.

'Hello Frank, what can I do for you on this fine summers day?' He knew it wasnt a social call as Frank and himself never really got on after it was announced Audrey was Walter's mate.

'I'm calling about land,' Frank started. Walter couldnt help but lean back in his office chair rolling his eyes up at the ceiling.

'I wanted to ask you if we could build some homes to the south of your territory. It's not as if your using it being such a small pack,' Frank went on, ' My families are growing and I'm running out of space to house them. You can understand cant you?'

'Frank, I've told you before, I'm not open to sharing our territory with you. Like you pointed out, we are a small pack with a small amount of land for our wolves to roam. You know we're not far from town so I need the space to keep my pack safe.'

'Walter, come on old friend...'

'Frank! I've said no!' Walter interrupted Frank before he said anything else.

With that, Frank hung up the phone. With a large sigh, Walter put the receiver down and rubbed his temples. 'That man never stops.' He thought to himself. He carried on with his work before lunch was ready. Audrey called the children to get cleaned up before they ate. Mrs Smith, the house cook, started to bring the food to the table just as Walter came from his office. Audrey could see by his face something was bothering him. 'Are you alright my love?' she asked.

'Yes, yes Just Frank going on about land again.'

'Will that man ever stop!' Audrey said with a tone in her voice, which indicated her annoyance.

'He would only get that land over my dead body.' with that said they sat down for lunch.

Meanwhile at Hilltop, Frank slammed the phone down with a roar, 'Argh! That man!' Frank stood up from his desk pushing his chair back so hard that it hit the bookcase behind and knocked off some books.

Matthew, Frank's beta, came rushing in with a puzzled look on his face, 'What's wrong with you?' he asked Frank.

'I've had it with him! First Audrey! now this!' he slammed his fist into his desk.

'Wont he let you build?' Matthew asked, even though he new the answer.

'No he f*****g wont! I've had it with him! I'm taking that land weather he likes it or not!' He looked at Matthew with black eyes. 'Call your men to the conference room, we are taking my land.'

'Yes alpha.' Matthew mind link his men to met him in the conference room in 10 minutes.

Frank entered the room where Matthews men stood waiting 'Tonight we take the land I'm owed!' Frank started to address the men before him. With evil in his eyes and a smile on his face, a plan of action came together.

'That land will be mine!'

It was getting late but it was still hot out. Walter and Audrey were getting ready for bed. He changed out of his suit into some shorts, went into the bathroom to brush is teeth. Audrey got out of her dress and put a thin strap top on with a pair of shorts that matched. She went into the bathroom and join Walter at the sink to brush her teeth too. when she was finished, she turned to Walter and asked,

'What are you going to do about Frank?'

As they both left the bathroom they headed to the bed to get in.

'I've told him no. I'll report him to the elders if he keeps asking.' He replied.

With that Audrey got comfortable in Walter's arms, rested her head in his chest and fell asleep. Walter looked towards the window out at the night sky and slowly drifted off to sleep himslef.

Walter shot out of bed to the smell of smoke and the sound of screams. Audrey immediately woke. She rushed to the bedroom door but the handle was too hot to touch. They could see the fire outside lighting up the night sky. All the homes at Whitetop were on fire. Being made of trees from the surrounding area, the fires were spreading quickly. Audrey was panicking as she couldnt get to the girls,

'My babies!' she screamed.

Walter crashed through the bedroom door and rushed down the corridor towards the girls room. Audrey tried to follow but the flames were getting higher.

'Audrey? Try and get outside!' Walter shouted back towards their bedroom.

Charlotte wasnt in bed which made him panic. 'CHARLOTTE!' He shouted. But with the screams from outside, it was making it hard for him to hear if she replied.

'Wildfires dont happen around here' he thought to himself, 'I know it's been hot, but not that hot surely.'

He tried to leave the girls room with lucy in his arms but the flames were out of control. He went towards the window to try and find a way out. He just about saw some figures under tree line on the edge of the homes. 'Why are they just standing there?' he asked himself.

'Why aren't they helping?'

Just then the figures started to move which caused Walter to freeze in shock.

'Oh no!' he shuddered at the sight of one of the men.

'Matthew!'

With that, Walter new these werent Wildfires.
