9 Addie Sometime after midnight, I opened my eyes. I had no idea what might have awakened me — I tended to sleep like a log, and rarely got up in the middle of the night — but there I was, staring at the ceiling, listening to Jake breathe deeply next to me. A faint light came into the room from the nightlight in the bathroom down the hall, illuminating enough to show me that Taffy was asleep as well, curled into a little ball in her bed. A faint rattle in the vents told me the central heat was working away in the background, protecting us from the sub-freezing temperatures outside.
