The Confession That Never Happened

866 Words
A week passed, but Arin could no longer hide from his feelings. Every smile from Kaisha brightened his day. Every goodbye left him counting the hours until he would see her again. He had made a decision. He was going to tell her the truth. Not just that he loved her... But that he intended to fight for their future, no matter what it cost. --- One Friday afternoon, Arin called Daniel into his office. "I need your help." Daniel smiled knowingly. "This isn't about business, is it?" Arin shook his head. "No." "It's about Kaisha." Arin looked surprised. "Was I that obvious?" Daniel laughed. "Sir, I've worked for you for five years. You used to spend every evening reviewing financial reports." "And now?" "Now you spend them buying storybooks for children and looking at your phone, hoping someone named Kaisha will send you a message." Arin rubbed the back of his neck, embarrassed. "I've fallen in love." Daniel's smile softened. "I know." "I'm going to tell her." "I think you should." --- That afternoon, Arin stopped at a florist. Rows of colorful flowers filled the shop. The owner approached him. "Looking for something special?" "Yes." "For your fiancée?" Arin paused before answering. "No." "For the woman I love." The florist smiled warmly and handed him a bouquet of white lilies mixed with pale pink roses. "They represent sincerity, hope, and new beginnings." "They're perfect." --- At the community center, Kaisha was decorating the playground for the children's annual Talent Day. Paper lanterns swayed gently in the breeze. The children practiced songs and dances while she encouraged each one. "You'll do wonderfully," she told little Emma, adjusting the ribbon in her hair. Just then, Arin arrived. Hidden behind his back was the bouquet. His heart pounded so hard he wondered if everyone could hear it. "Kaisha?" She turned and smiled. "You came!" "I wouldn't miss Talent Day." "I've been saving you a front-row seat." He laughed. "I feel honored." She noticed he seemed nervous. "Is everything okay?" "There... there's something I need to tell you." Her smile faded into curiosity. "What is it?" Arin took a deep breath. Before he could speak, Daniel came running toward them. "Sir!" Arin frowned. "I said no interruptions." "I'm sorry, but this can't wait." Daniel handed him his phone. "It's your father." Reluctantly, Arin answered. "Hello?" His father's voice was unusually excited. "Where are you?" "At the community center." "Come to Ashford Mansion immediately." "Why?" "The engagement ceremony has been moved forward." Arin froze. "What?" "The royal family wants to announce your engagement to Princess Liora tonight." His heart stopped. "Tonight?" "Yes. The press has already been invited." The call ended. Arin stood motionless. The bouquet slipped slightly in his hand. Kaisha looked at him with concern. "Arin..." He couldn't find the words. Finally, he whispered, "My engagement..." She felt her stomach tighten. "...is being announced tonight." The world around them suddenly seemed very quiet. The laughter of the children faded into the background. Kaisha forced a small smile. "You should go." "I don't want to." "But you have to." "Kaisha, listen—" "No." She gently shook her head. "You don't owe me an explanation." "But—" "Your family is waiting." She looked at the bouquet he still held. "They're beautiful." "I bought them for you." For a brief moment, hope flickered in her eyes. Then it disappeared. "You should give flowers to the woman you're going to marry." Her words pierced Arin's heart. "They were never meant for—" Before he could finish, she stepped back. "I think the children need me." She turned and walked away before the tears gathering in her eyes could fall. Arin wanted to follow her. To tell her everything. To stop her. But Daniel placed a hand on his shoulder. "We have to leave." With one last glance at Kaisha, Arin got into the car. The bouquet remained on the seat beside him. Untouched. Unspoken. --- That evening, the grand ballroom of Ashford Mansion was filled with journalists, business leaders, and members of the royal court. Cameras flashed as Arin stood beside Princess Liora. His parents smiled proudly. The King raised a glass. "Tonight, we celebrate a promise made many years ago." Applause echoed through the hall. But Liora noticed something no one else did. Arin wasn't looking at the guests. He wasn't looking at her. He was staring at the bouquet of white lilies and pink roses resting on a nearby table. Still wrapped. Still waiting for the woman they had been meant for. Liora quietly understood. His heart had already chosen. And she was not the one. Far across the city, Kaisha stood alone outside the community center after everyone had gone home. She looked up at the night sky, where fireworks from the engagement celebration lit the horizon. A single tear rolled down her cheek. "So this," she whispered, "is what loving someone you can't have feels like." Neither of them slept that night. One was trapped by a promise. The other was letting go of a dream. Neither realized that Princess Liora had already begun making a decision that would change all of their lives forever.
