Kingdom of Wessex 871 - 878The Vikings kept their promise and left Wessex in peace for five years as King Alfred established his authority and created his family. Maintaining their word was aided by the distractions forced upon the Danes, such as the 872 uprising in Northumbria and the overthrow of their puppet king. They moved to Lindsey and, from their base in Torksey, suppressed the revolt. The following year, they turned their attention to Mercia, capturing Repton. They fought on, driving King Burgred overseas, taking the kingdom, and installing the minion king, Ceowulf. Meanwhile, in Wessex, Alfred and Aelhswith had a son and named him Edward, and, a year later, a daughter, Aethelgifu, followed.
