The clang of iron echoed through the dimly lit corridors as Elena was dragged forward, her feet barely touching the ground. The guards' rough grip on her arms bruised her already battered body, but she stayed silent. What could she say? Words wouldn’t save her, nor would they ease the cold knot of despair tightening in her chest.
As they passed the long rows of cells, her stomach churned. The air reeked of dampness and desperation. From behind the iron bars, muffled screams and cries of women blended with the lecherous laughter of men. Elena’s heart twisted in her chest. She clenched her fists, biting back the nausea rising in her throat. 'This is the breeder's wing,' she realized, her heart sinking further into her chest.
The guards stopped in front of a cell and kicked the door open with a loud bang. They didn’t bother to be gentle as they threw her onto the single, hard bed inside.
"Welcome to your new home, EXCLUSIVE breeder," one of the guards sneered, his voice low and filled with mockery. His eyes lingered on her a moment too long, a flicker of something vile crossing his face.
But his companion nudged him with an elbow. "Don’t even think about it," he muttered. "She’s the Alpha’s woman, and Luna Freya would skin us alive if we do anything without her permission."
"Yeah," the first one grumbled, dragging his gaze away. "For now."
With a final chuckle, they slammed the iron door shut, leaving Elena alone in the suffocating silence.
Elena lay still on the bed, her body too broken to move, her mind was struggling to make a connection to her wolf, Merina. But after trying for a long time, she could not find a trace of Merina in her head. She felt so hollow after she figured out the fact that Alpha Ray, the man she had loved for four years, whom she had given her youth and her abilities, left her no way at all.
'This is where they want me to rot,' she thought bitterly. 'A breeder. Stripped of everything. No freedom, no dignity… no love. Only Despair.'
Minutes passed, or perhaps hours. The line of time seemed to blur in the dim cell. The sound of approaching footsteps snapped her out of her haze. The door creaked open again, and in walked a young woman with fiery red hair tied into a neat bun, Roxy, Freya’s ever-loyal maid. Behind her were two Omega servants, each carrying trays with two bowls on them.
Roxy’s sharp eyes scanned the room before landing on Elena. A smile spread across her lips, but it lacked any warmth. "Still alive, I see," she said mockingly. "Ah, the mighty healer, reduced to this," Roxy said with a sneer as she looked at Elena. "How the tables have turned! The mighty healer is now at this maid's mercy." She motioned to the maids, who set the trays down on the small table in the corner of the room.
Roxy gestured to the bowls. "These are precious medicines, straight from Luna Fiona’s orders. She’s so generous, isn’t she? Willing to waste these on someone like you, just so you can recover in time to serve the Alpha properly. Only she is worthy to be a Luna, unlike someone like you who tried to kill our Alpha because of Jealousy."
Elena’s lips twisted into a bitter smile. "How generous of her," she murmured, her voice laced with sarcasm.
Roxy continued, her tone mocking. "You should be grateful, you know. Most breeders don’t get such special treatment. After all, you’ll have the honor of giving your first time to the Alpha himself. Isn’t that something? You should be proud."
A hollow laugh escaped Elena’s lips, cutting through Roxy’s words like a blade. Her laughter grew louder, wild and defiant.
"Proud?" Elena spat, her voice shaking. "Of what? Serving that heartless bastard who discarded me like trash? I’d rather die than become his breeder."
Roxy’s smirk paused, and her expression twisted with irritation. Without warning, her hand shot out, striking Elena across the face. The force of the slap echoed in the cell.
"Mind your tongue, you wretched woman!" Roxy hissed, her face inches from Elena’s. But as her body blocked the view of the servants, her hand moved in a flash. In the process of pulling away, she slipped a small, dried stalk of broken grass into Elena’s lap.
Elena’s eyes widened slightly as her fingers brushed against the Moonlight grass. Her gaze shot up to meet Roxy’s, but the maid’s face was expressionless.
Roxy straightened, brushing down her skirt as though nothing had happened. "If you’re so eager to die, why don’t you ask the Alpha himself?" she sneered. "Perhaps if you please him tonight, he’ll grant you a swift death."
Elena retorted, "Thank you for your concern." She closed her eyes and refused to entertain these vile people anymore.
Roxy motioned for the servants to leave. "I don’t have time to waste on a lowly breeder anyway. Just leave the medicine here. Whether she takes it or not is her problem."
The maids bowed slightly and followed Roxy out of the room. Just before leaving, Roxy paused in the doorway, her lips curling into a smirk.
"Take the medicine," she said, her tone dripping with false kindness. "Heal yourself. Tonight won’t be easy for you."
The door slammed shut, and Elena was alone again. She sat still for a moment, then opened her eyes, but her eyes now sparkled like stars. Slowly, she opened her hand and looked at the Moonlight grass. 'Roxy… What are you planning now?'
Her thoughts were interrupted by the faint scent wafting from the bowls on the table. She forced herself to her feet, every step a struggle, and approached the table.
Picking up one of the bowls, she brought it to her nose and sniffed. A bitter, acrid smell filled her senses, and she chuckled darkly. "Fiona, oh Fiona… Is this your idea of generosity?" She set the bowl down, her lips curling into a grim smile.
She clutched the Moonlight grass tightly in her hand, her mind racing. 'If they want me to dig my own grave, they have to ask me if I agree or not.'
She took one of the bowls to her lips and drank deeply, the bitter liquid burning her throat. As for the second one, she simply dumped it in the tiny washroom attached to her cell.
She placed the moonlight grass inside her mouth and chewed slowly. A burning sensation washed over her whole body. With the supposed 'healing medicine' boosting the potency of the powerful moonlight grass, she felt like her body was exploding from the inside. She licked the trail of blood from her lips and looked at the door with her bloodshot eyes.
"Fiona, the game has already started as you wish," she whispered to the empty cell as her eyes started to glow with a golden hue.
"But don’t think for a moment that the one who would win would be you. Get, set, ready!"
