Chapter 3: Maeve's POV

1093 Words
The first light of dawn filtered through the trees as I stood at the edge of the training ground, watching the pack gather. The crisp morning air was filled with the scent of pine and damp earth, but it carried something else today—tension. I could feel it in the way the wolves moved, in the whispered conversations that stopped whenever I walked by. My time was coming. Soon, I would no longer be the future Alpha—I would be the Alpha. I took a deep breath and let it out slowly, my gaze sweeping over the familiar faces of the pack. My Beta, Ethan, stood to my right, tall and broad-shouldered, his expression calm but his eyes watchful. He had been my father’s Beta for years, a trusted advisor and a steady presence. But now, with the transition of power, Ethan would be my second-in-command. I trusted him, but I wondered if he still saw me as the young girl he had watched grow up, or if he was ready to accept me as his leader. Beside him stood Lena, my Gamma, sharp-eyed and quick-witted. She had been my sparring partner during training for as long as I could remember, and if there was anyone in the pack who believed I could lead, it was her. Her loyalty was unwavering, but even she had questioned whether the pack was ready for a female Alpha. We had trained together for years, but this was different. This was real. As I watched the wolves gather, I couldn’t help but feel the weight of their expectations pressing down on me. Every glance, every movement seemed charged with anticipation. The warriors were already warming up, stretching their limbs in preparation for the morning drills. They were the heart of the pack’s strength, our frontline fighters. Jacob, a seasoned warrior with years of experience, caught my eye. He was older than most, his face lined with the scars of countless battles. He served under my father with loyalty and discipline. But now? I wasn’t so sure where his allegiance lay. Jacob had never said anything directly, but I could feel his doubt. His loyalty to my father was unquestionable, but me? I was still earning that. He nodded once in my direction, a small gesture of acknowledgment, but there was no warmth in it. The Omegas, as usual, moved quietly in the background, preparing the training grounds. Nina, one of the younger Omegas, was laying out equipment, her small hands deftly arranging the sparring mats and weapons. She worked quickly, her gaze flickering toward me only briefly before she returned to her task. The Omegas were often overlooked, but I knew how important they were to the pack’s daily life. Without them, things would fall apart. “Ready for the day?” Ethan’s voice pulled me from my thoughts. He stepped forward, his eyes scanning the training ground before settling on me. “The pack seems on edge.” “They know what’s coming,” I replied, crossing my arms over my chest. “Change is never easy.” Ethan nodded slowly, his gaze thoughtful. “They’ll follow you, Maeve. They trust you.” “They trust my father,” I corrected, feeling the weight of the words settle over me. “I have to earn their trust myself.” A quiet pause lingered between us. I could see the unspoken concern in Ethan’s eyes. He had been by my father’s side for years, and I knew that this transition wasn’t easy for him either. We had trained together, strategized together, but leadership was different. Leadership demanded respect, loyalty, and the ability to make decisions that affected everyone. I turned my attention back to the training ground. Lena had already begun leading the drills, her sharp commands echoing across the clearing as the warriors paired off for sparring. I watched as she moved among them, her form quick and efficient, every movement precise. She had always been the best fighter among us, but she also had a sharp mind. Lena wasn’t just a Gamma—she was a strategist, someone who could think two steps ahead in any battle. But even with Lena’s confidence, there were still whispers. Some of the older pack members weren’t shy about voicing their concerns. The idea of a female Alpha was... challenging for them. I had grown up hearing the doubts, the quiet comments about tradition and the way things had always been. But those days were over. This was my time, and I would prove them wrong. “Maeve,” Ethan said, breaking the silence again. “You’ve got this.” His words were meant to reassure, but the knot in my stomach only tightened. “I know,” I replied, though my voice lacked the conviction I wanted it to have. As the drills continued, I felt the pressure mounting. I needed space, room to breathe, to think. The weight of responsibility was suffocating. Without another word, I turned and walked away from the training ground, leaving Ethan and the others behind. I needed to run. The forest called to me, its quiet whispers pulling me deeper into the trees. Without thinking, I stripped off my clothes and shifted. My wolf surged forward, taking control as I hit the ground running. The earth felt solid beneath my paws, the wind rushing through my fur. This was freedom. Out here, away from the stares, the expectations, I could just be. No Alpha, no future leader—just Maeve. I ran for miles, letting the tension melt away with every stride. The forest blurred around me, a sea of green and brown, as I pushed myself faster. My wolf reveled in the release, her wild instincts taking over as we dodged through the trees. This was what I needed—space, silence, and the freedom to let go. But even as I ran, I couldn’t escape the thoughts swirling in my mind. The doubts, the fears. What if I wasn’t enough? What if I failed? I slowed as I reached the edge of a familiar clearing, my wolf’s senses suddenly alert. The wind shifted, carrying a scent I hadn’t noticed before. Familiar, yet distant. My wolf bristled, her instincts sharpened as we scanned the area. There was something here. Someone. I didn’t know it yet, but this run was the beginning of something I couldn’t have anticipated. A reunion, perhaps. Or maybe just the start of a new chapter—one that would change everything.
