Midnight had come and gone.
The contract was ash.
But Zara was still in Ayaan Blackwell’s penthouse.
She had chosen to stay.
Now she had to live with it.
---
Day 1. No Contract.
The morning was different. No rules. No clause. No time limit.
Zara woke alone in the guest room. The bed was too big. The silence was too loud.
She expected him to be gone. To have changed his mind. To have kicked her out now that the paper was gone.
Instead, there was coffee. Black. No sugar. Outside her door.
No note. No knock. Just coffee.
Her hands shook as she picked it up.
He remembered.
She found him in the gym. Sweat on his skin. Gloves off. Punching bag bleeding under his fists.
He didn’t stop when she entered.
“Morning,” she said. Small. Uncertain.
He paused. Glanced at her. Then went back to punching.
“Breakfast is at 8,” he said. “If you want it.”
If you want it.
Not an order. A choice.
Zara’s chest tightened.
“I want it,” she said.
---
Day 3.
The board was circling again.
Zara heard it through the glass walls of his office. Angry voices. Victoria’s voice.
“He chose the contract girl over the merger. He’s unstable.”
“He’s distracted.”
“We need a new CEO.”
Ayaan didn’t raise his voice. He never did.
“Get out,” he said. One sentence.
Silence.
Then footsteps.
That night, he came to her room at 1:14AM.
Zara was awake. She always was now.
He didn’t knock.
“They think you’re my weakness,” he said.
Zara sat up. “Am I?”
He looked at her. Really looked. Like he was seeing her for the first time without the contract between them.
“Yes,” he said. “And I don’t care.”
He sat on the edge of her bed. Not touching. Just… there.
“Victoria offered me the merger again today,” he said. “If I cut ties with you.”
Zara’s heart stopped. “And?”
“I told her to burn in hell,” he said simply.
Zara laughed. She couldn’t help it. It broke out of her like a sob.
Ayaan’s mouth twitched. Almost a smile.
“You’re insane,” she whispered.
“For you?” He leaned closer. “Yes.”
He didn’t kiss her. Not yet.
He just reached out and tucked a strand of hair behind her ear.
His fingers lingered.
Then he left.
---
Day 12.
Victoria didn’t give up.
She showed up at a charity gala. In red. In his face.
Zara was there too. In black. Because Ayaan said black.
“Darling,” Victoria purred, sliding her hand down Ayaan’s arm. “We need to talk. Alone.”
Ayaan removed her hand. Cold.
“I’m not alone,” he said.
He pulled Zara forward. His hand on the small of her back. Possessive. Public.
“Meet Zara Reyes,” he said to the room. “She’s not my contract. She’s mine.”
Gasps. Cameras. Whispers.
Victoria’s face cracked. “You’ll regret this.”
Ayaan didn’t blink. “The only thing I regret is taking 180 days to say it.”
He led Zara out. Past the crowd. Past the cameras.
In the car, she was shaking.
“You didn’t have to do that,” she said.
“Yes, I did,” he said. “Because you’re not a secret. You’re not a clause. You’re the aftermath.”
---
Day 28.
The first fight.
Zara found out he was going to buy her brother’s hospital.
“Why?” she demanded. “To control me?”
“No,” Ayaan said. “To make sure no one can ever threaten him again. To make sure you never have to sign anything for money again.”
“That’s not love,” she snapped. “That’s ownership.”
Ayaan’s eyes went dark. “You think I don’t know the difference?”
He slammed his hand on the desk. Not at her. Beside her.
“I’m trying,” he said. Voice raw. “I’m trying to be a man you chose. Not a devil you were forced into.”
Zara froze.
“I don’t know how,” he admitted. “Teach me.”
That broke her.
She walked to him. Took his bleeding hand from the desk.
“I’m not going anywhere,” she said. “But stop buying me. Be with me.”
He nodded. Once.
---
Day 45.
He took her to his childhood home.
It was not a penthouse. It was a house. Empty. Cold.
“My father raised me here,” he said. “He taught me that emotions were liabilities.”
Zara walked the empty halls. “He was wrong.”
Ayaan stopped in a room. A boy’s room. Dusty. Abandoned.
“I wasn’t allowed to cry in here,” he said. “So I didn’t.”
Zara took his hand. “You can now.”
He didn’t cry.
But he didn’t pull away.
---
Day 60.
Victoria made her move.
She leaked photos. Zara leaving the penthouse at 2AM. Zara in Ayaan’s car. Headlines: CEO’s Gold Digger.
The stock dipped.
Ayaan called an emergency press conference.
Zara begged him not to. “It’ll get worse.”
“No,” he said. “Hiding made it worse.”
He stood at the podium. Alone.
“Ms. Reyes is not a scandal,” he said. “She’s my partner. My choice. My future. If you have a problem with that, sell your shares.”
The room exploded.
Stock rose 14% by close.
That night, Ayaan came home exhausted.
Zara was waiting with tea.
“You didn’t have to risk everything,” she said.
“I already did,” he said. “The day I let you sign that contract.”
He pulled her into his lap. Right there on the floor.
“I’m not good at this,” he said into her neck. “But I’m yours. All of it. The ruthless. The broken. All of it.”
Zara held him. Tighter.
“Then let me have all of it.”
---
Day 89.
He proposed.
No ring. No knees. No speech.
They were in the kitchen at 3AM. Making eggs. Badly.
Ayaan looked at her. Flour on her nose.
“Marry me,” he said. Like he was ordering coffee.
Zara blinked. “What?”
“Marry me,” he said again. “Not for contract. Not for 180 days. Forever. Because I can’t imagine the aftermath without you in it.”
Zara stared.
Then she threw flour at him.
He blinked. White.
She laughed. Hard.
“Yes,” she said. “You i***t. Yes.”
He wiped flour off his face. And kissed her.
For real. For the first time. Without fear. Without clause.
---
Day 180.
Their wedding was not big.
No press. No Victoria.
Just them. A judge. Her brother, healthy, walking her down the aisle.
Ayaan wore black.
Zara wore white.
He didn’t say vows.
He just looked at her and said,
“The contract ended 180 days ago, Zara.
This is for life.”
She cried.
He didn’t.
But he held her hand like he’d never let go.
Because he wouldn’t.
The penthouse was still theirs.
But now it had her books in the library.
His coffee mugs in her sink.
Laughter in the halls.
.
---
Day 62. The Morning After.
Zara woke to sunlight and silence.
No contract on the desk. No timer counting down.
Just Ayaan. Asleep beside her. His arm heavy over her waist.
She stared at him. This man who never slept. Who never softened.
His face was… peaceful.
Her finger traced his jaw.
His eyes opened instantly. Black. Alert.
“You’re staring,” he said. Voice rough from sleep.
“You’re not scowling,” she replied.
A small huff. Almost a laugh.
He pulled her closer. “Get used to it, Mrs. Blackwell.”
Zara froze. “Mrs.?”
He kissed her forehead. “We’re married. That’s what you are now.”
She hid her face in his chest. Her heart was too loud.
---
Day 71. The In-Laws.
Ayaan’s mother called.
Zara expected ice. Judgment.
Instead: “Dinner. Sunday. 7PM. Don’t be late.”
Click.
Zara panicked. “She hates me.”
Ayaan took her hand. “She hates everyone. You’ll be fine.”
Sunday came.
The Blackwell estate was colder than the penthouse.
His mother, Evelyn, was tall. Silver hair. Eyes like Ayaan’s.
She looked Zara up and down. Once.
“You’re the contract girl,” she said.
Zara stiffened. “I was. Now I’m his wife.”
Evelyn’s eyebrow rose. Then… she nodded.
“Sit,” she said. “Tell me how you survived him.”
Dinner ended with Evelyn passing Zara Ayaan’s childhood photo.
“Keep him human,” she said. “No one else can.”
In the car, Zara was quiet.
Ayaan glanced at her. “What?”
“She likes me,” Zara whispered.
Ayaan blinked. “Impossible.”
Zara laughed. For the first time, the Blackwell name felt like home.
---
Day 88. The Nightmare.
Zara woke screaming.
Ayaan was there in a second. Lights on. “Zara. Hey. Look at me.”
She was shaking. “The hospital. The contract. You leaving me—”
He pulled her into his lap. Right there on the bed.
“It’s over,” he said. “I’m here. I’m not going anywhere.”
She clutched his shirt. “Promise me.”
“I don’t make promises I can’t keep,” he said. “So yes. I promise.”
He didn’t let go till dawn.
---
Day 95. The Business Trip.
Ayaan had to go to London. 3 days.
Zara’s stomach dropped. “Alone?”
He frowned. “You’re coming.”
“I have a life here—”
“No,” he said. Firm. “My wife doesn’t stay behind.”
First class. His meetings. Her book.
Nights in a hotel suite overlooking the Thames.
On the last night, he canceled dinner.
“Why?” she asked.
“Because I’d rather have you,” he said. “Than a merger.”
He chose her. Again.
---
Day 102. The Gift.
Zara came home to an empty penthouse.
No Ayaan. Just a key on the table. And a note.
Address. 8PM.
She went.
It was a library. Her library. Floor to ceiling books.
A reading nook by the window. Her name on the door.
Zara Reyes Library.
Ayaan stood inside. Nervous. Actually nervous.
“You said you missed books,” he said. “So I built you one.”
Zara couldn’t speak. She just ran to him.
“i***t,” she whispered into his suit. “You’re not ruthless. You’re just… you.”
He held her tight. “Don’t tell the board.”
---
Day 110. The Truth.
Zara found old files. His father’s will.
“You were supposed to marry Victoria,” she said. “For the company.”
Ayaan didn’t deny it. “Yes.”
“Why didn’t you?”
“Because I met you,” he said. “And I’d rather be broke than chained.”
Zara closed the file. “You’re not broke.”
“No,” he said. “I’m rich. Because I have you.”
---
Day 119. The Eve of 180.
Tomorrow would have been the end.
Zara stood at the window. Rain again.
Ayaan came behind her. No words.
He just wrapped his arms around her. Chin on her shoulder.
“One year ago, you walked in with a contract,” he said.
“Tomorrow, we celebrate 180 days of choosing each other.”
Zara turned in his arms. “No contract. No fear. Just us
“Just us,” he said.
He kissed her. Slow. Deep. Like a vow.
Outside, the rain stopped.
The aftermath wasn’t an ending.
It was a beginning.
