Unmasking Deception

Ariana sat on the edge of her bed, staring at the small USB drive in her palm. Dante’s words echoed in her mind. “The people closest to you are not who they seem.” Her heart hammered as she plugged the USB into her laptop. The screen flickered. A single video file appeared. Clicking play, she held her breath. The footage was grainy, taken from a hidden camera. At first, she didn’t recognize the setting. Then, realization hit her like a slap. It was Mira’s apartment. Ariana leaned closer. Mira sat on a couch, across from a man dressed in black. The camera was positioned high, catching the side of Mira’s face. Ariana’s stomach twisted when the man slid an envelope across the table. Mira hesitated, then took it. She opened it—and her face lit up. Cash. A lot of it. Ariana’s blood ran cold. The man spoke, voice low and menacing. "You know what to do. Keep her in the dark. Make sure she trusts you." Ariana slapped the laptop shut. No. This couldn't be real. Mira was her best friend. She wouldn't—she couldn't—betray her. Her phone buzzed. Mira. Ariana stared at the screen, her pulse racing. Did Mira know she had seen the footage? Taking a deep breath, she answered. "Hey." "Hey, Ari! Are you okay?" Mira’s voice was casual, almost too casual. "You’ve been quiet all day." Ariana swallowed hard. "Yeah, just… thinking." "Thinking about what?" Mira asked. Ariana hesitated. Should she confront her? Before she could decide, a deep voice interrupted. "That’s enough." Ariana jerked at the sudden sound. Dante. He was in her apartment. She spun around. There he was—leaning against her doorframe like he belonged there. Dark suit. Unreadable expression. Her breath caught. Mira’s voice crackled through the phone. "Ari? Who’s that?" Ariana ended the call without answering. "How the hell did you get in here?" she demanded, her heart pounding. Dante smirked, stepping closer. His presence filled the small space. "I have my ways." Ariana crossed her arms. "Breaking into my apartment isn’t one of them." Dante ignored her. His eyes flicked to the closed laptop. "You watched it, didn’t you?" Ariana hesitated, then nodded. Dante studied her, his gaze sharp. "And?" Ariana swallowed. "I don’t know what to believe." Dante took another step forward, erasing the space between them. "You do know," he murmured. "You just don’t want to accept it." His scent—smoky, expensive, intoxicating—wrapped around her. Ariana lifted her chin. "You think you know me so well?" Dante’s eyes darkened. "I know when a woman is lying to herself." Ariana’s pulse spiked. Because he was right. A part of her had always ignored the signs—Mira’s strange behavior, her sudden access to money. Dante’s voice dropped to a whisper. "You don’t have to trust me, but you need to trust the truth." Ariana shivered. Not from fear. From something dangerous. Something forbidden. She hated how he affected her, how his presence set her on fire. And Dante knew it. He could feel the tension thickening. "You’re playing a dangerous game," she whispered. Dante’s lips curved. "Sweetheart, I don’t play games." Before she could reply, his fingers brushed her chin. Ariana inhaled sharply. The air crackled between them. His touch was barely there, yet it sent a shockwave through her. Dante’s gaze flickered to her lips. She knew what was coming. And God help her—she wanted it. But then— A loud bang shattered the moment. Ariana jumped. Dante’s entire body tensed. Someone was at the door. No—someone was trying to break in. Dante’s eyes turned ice-cold. "Stay behind me," he ordered. Ariana didn’t argue. Dante moved fast, pulling a gun from inside his jacket. Ariana’s heart stopped. The door burst open. A masked man stormed in, weapon raised. Dante fired. The man dropped. Ariana screamed. Before she could process what had happened, Dante grabbed her wrist. "We need to go. Now." Ariana was still in shock, but she didn’t resist. Dante yanked her toward the balcony. "Trust me," he said. And then— They jumped.
