By the time she got to Oregon she was relieved to be there and to be able to get out of the car. She pulled into the campus and went inside. She got her student ID and the key to her dorm room and a map of the campus and her schedule. She had a few weeks before classes would start but that was a good thing because it would give her time to get acclimated with the campus and the town around the campus. After all she would need to buy food and shop for things that she would need. She had brought many things with her that she had bought on sale here and there. She didn’t have any trouble finding her dorm and thankfully for her she had a room assignment on the first floor. That made it a lot easier to get her stuff inside. Once she got everything in, she decided to put everything away and get settled in. It took her all afternoon but by the time she was done she felt a lot more at home. She couldn’t help but smile as she thought about how far she had come. She was proud of herself.
Tahlia decided to go for a walk around the campus to see where things were. She knew she wouldn’t get all the way around the campus before it got dark, but she would have time to walk some it and grab her dinner in the dinning hall before it got dark. She was given breakfast, lunch, and dinner at the college as part of her scholarship. So, she didn’t have to worry about buying food. All she had to buy out of her pocket was her personal items. Her scholarship even covered the cost of her books and a laptop. As she walked around the campus she was pleasantly surprised at how open and welcoming the grounds were. She thought that she was going to like it there. Everyone seemed to be very friendly and welcoming as well. She was happy to be there and have this opportunity.
She spent her time the rest of the summer learning her way around the campus and making sure that she had all of her school supplies. She was also fortunate enough to make a few friends with others that came early as well. She was glad for that. She had never really had any friends in high school because most people didn’t pay her much attention or considered her to be scum and would never consider befriending her. That was because of who her stepfather was. No one thought much of him or his family in that town. She wasn’t exactly sure why that was but knew firsthand that it was true, and since she was considered to be part of that family, even though it was through marriage, those opinions extended to her and her mother. She was glad to not be part of that any longer.
