Ben had gone from slavishly following the whims of a book to slavishly following the whims of a bird. Anyone in their right mind would have abandoned the mission at the point of “recurring bird leaves clue on windshield,” but for the first time in nearly five years, things were starting to make sense—in the sense that everything was supernatural, he’d been wrong all along, and nothing made sense.
