Chapter two

They walked only for twenty minutes but Lilith was already short of breath, the first time they stopped was near a little source of water. Legend said that the water in there was pure and that it could wash away all the impurities. They took some of that water and first washed their hands, then threw away the water in the bucket and took some more from the little pond to wash their faces. After that little pause, they continued climbing the stairs. "How long is this stair?" She asked panting. "Maybe around four thousand steps. Are you already tired? " John looked at her and winked in her direction. He was mocking her. However, all she could think about was that she would’ve never imagined that going up those stairs could be so tiring. After some time, they arrived at a crossroad and decided to stop for some minutes. "I didn't remember you were so out of shape. What happened? Are you feeling unwell? " He looked at Lilith who was panting as if she ran for ten miles. Her hands were trembling and even with the redness from the climbing, she was pale. "I don't know, maybe my things are about to start." Was all she could say. She went to the rock that was there and sat on it. Her head felt heavy and the extremities of her limbs were cold, it was as if she was about to pass out, but before she could hit the ground John caught her. He touched her forehead and then laid her on the ground. "You have a high fever. I should have some paracetamol with me, it should help you. " He quickly took out the bag where he kept his medicines and took out a pill and a little bottle. He first opened the little bottle and made her sniff its content, the next moment Lilith felt her head clearer and more present. Then he gave her the pill and some water. "What was that thing?" She pointed the little bottle. "This? It's something that my grandmother gave me. She told me to use it in case someone was about to fait or passed out. " He put everything back in his rucksack and sat on the ground looking at her. "You should've told me you had a fever." "I didn't know I had it... This morning I felt just fine ..." Just as they were talking it started raining. “It can’t be! They said it wouldn’t rain!” John quickly stood up and helped Lily to get up on her legs. Her head was still hurting but now the most annoying thing was that gelid rain. Every single droplet was like a needle of ice prickling her skin. With her fever raising and the shivers through her body all she wanted was to escape that uncomfortable situation. They both took the path on the left and started descending the mountain, on their way they found a small village. “After this village, it will take us only fifteen minutes to get down.” Said John reassuringly. The rain was falling thick, and it was impossible to see anything more than three steps away. Lilith stopped for a second, her head was spinning, and in that fragment of time she lost sight of her friend. “John?” Her heart skipped a beat a she feared that she lost him. She looked around but couldn’t see anything. She saw a covered porch and hid there from the rain. She called her friend’s name a couple more times, but no answer could be heard. She leaned to the column of the porch and peered into the rain. Just as she was about to give up, she saw a silhouette walking toward her in the rain. Happiness filled her heart, “John! I’m here, just in front of you!” She was about to take a step forward when an ominous red light shone in the rain. The man approached her, and when he was near enough, he asked with an alluring voice, “Beautiful, are you lost? Do you need some help?” An instinctive fear rose in her heart and shaking her head she said, “No… I… I’m waiting for a f-friend.” “Oh? But I… Don’t see anyone.” The ‘man’ in front of her giggled and the blood in her veins froze. He was dangerous! All the cells of her body were screaming to escape, that it couldn’t end well, but her limbs felt heavy and she didn’t have even the energy to stand straight. When she moved, that thing grasped her shoulder making her scream. It was then that she was finally able to see the features of that man. His eyes were red, a turbid and dark color, he had two horns on his forehead and long, razor sharp teeth. Lilith tried to push him away, but all she was able to do was to make that creature laugh. Just as if she was nothing more than an ant, he pushed her to the ground and got on top of her. He inhaled her scent and then bit brutally her shoulder eating her flesh. She screamed again begging him to let her go, but without obtaining anything else if not more pain. She tried to push him away with her legs, but he blocked her with his body and pierced her leg with his claws. That monster was too strong for her, there was nothing she could do, if not to give up. ‘Am I going to die here by the hands of a demon?’ Hot tears were falling down her cheeks, she could feel her blood leaving her body and that monster eating her flesh, his claws scratching against her bone. She was too weak for a monster like him. ‘If only I was a powerful monster too…’ Was it because of her screams or the scent of her blood, that another monster appeared there, and while watching the scene his ‘heart’ started beating again after millennia. He approached the demon on top of Lilith and as if that creature was nothing for him, he took it off her, tore out the heart of that fellow and devoured it. After he tore off his horns too, he threw away the corpse. While eating the horns he stared at the woman on the ground. She was almost dead, but her heart was still beating. He put away the horns in his coat and crouched on top of the dying woman. He inhaled her scent, just as the previous demon did, but his heart, on the contrary from the other, was beating fast. His eyes became red, he licked his lips and looked at the wound on her shoulder, then he licked her blood. ‘It’s her!’ He looked at the still body and he quickly thought of a way to save her. Then he asked with an excited tone, “Listen carefully to me. I can save you, but it will hurt a lot. You may lose yourself, but if your will is strong enough you may survive and be reborn as part of a stronger race. So, what do you choose? Life or death?” ‘Is he really offering to save me…?’ She wanted to live of course, but she wasn’t sure of what price that offer had. “L… Liv… e..” “Good girl.” That man’s smile was wicked and crazy, and for a moment Lilith thought of taking back her words but it was too late. The man sliced his right hand and black blood started flowing from the wound, and with that hand he pierced through her heart. The pain she felt in that moment was excruciating and unbearable. She couldn’t believe that she could feel even more pain. Every single millimeter of her body was burning as if instead of blood, in her veins flowed magma, burning everything on its path. And then she felt as if something was missing in her chest, she felt cold for a moment but then that coldness was replaced by something else, something new and foreign to her. Her body didn’t want to accept that thing and tried to fight it, but she did all she could to resist the impulse of tearing away that thing. Fortunately, that torture didn’t last long and soon she was finally able to open her eyes again. Now they were glowing, just as those of that creature, but hers weren’t bloody red but green like emeralds. The first thing she saw were the red eyes of the black-haired man on top of her. She didn’t think twice before overpowering him and change position with him. She knew better than anyone else, that that man was hers. And she would claim him right there, right away. Her one and only mate.
