“I made a bet with Mike and Johnson from the legal department. That I was going to have you. Since you were acting all righteous in the office and playing hard to get. I promised them I would make you fall for me and when you do, I am going to f**k you on camera and email it to them” William blurted out.
Amanda couldn’t breathe, she remembered Mike and Johnson who were among the many men who had asked her out the first week she began working in the company. She never found any of them worth her time or the kind of man she wanted and she was not interested in office romance not until William came alone. And here he was confessing to her that it was all a lie and a game to just sleep with her.
“You are saying_ all this while all you said and did was for a bet” Amanda still couldn’t believe what she heard William say.
“It was for a bet, now I would lose $1000 because you had to show up here unannounced. s**t! And those fools are going to laugh at me”
“Oh my God! William, please tell me you are lying_ all this while I was a bet to you_ you never loved me?”
William busts out in laughter.
“Love you_ you are a low-life office assistant, what would the likes of me do with someone like you_ you were playing hard to get. The guys thought you were some innocent girl out of everyone's reach I wanted to prove them wrong”
“You never loved me?” Amanda was devastated. William promised her heaven and earth. He made her feel special. He sent her flowers and love notes he almost worshiped the floor she walked on. And here he was laughing together with his woman at her delusion.
Amanda looked the woman's way, her laughter caught her attention.
“Oh William darling she thought you loved her,” the woman said between laughs.
The same shock that hit Amanda when she opened the door hit her again when she recognized the woman in the bed.
“Jesus Christ! William! That's your mother!” Amanda let out.
“She is not my mother you fool” he replied even as he walked back to the bed to kiss the woman on the lips.
“She is_ she is Mrs Jossy_ she is your mother” Amanda stammered in confusion as she was sure the woman on his bed was this mother. She had dinner with them in this very house two weeks ago. When William introduced her as his mother. Was that part of the game too?
“She is Mrs Jossy_ but not my mother. She is my stepmother. Know the difference” he answered between his teeth.
Amanda didn't just feel betrayed, she felt disgusted at him. William was sleeping with his father's wife and not even remorseful.
“God! I am such a fool. I have been a fool”
“Oh yes, you are, if you had not come here, I would have won my bet. You were such an easy target. I knew I was this close. I might have been lucky tonight”
Amanda knew William was right, he would have gotten lucky tonight, and she would have helped him win the bet. She could not take the pain and betrayal anymore; she ran out of the room and out of the mansion.
Whenever Amanda was sad there was only one person she could go to; Leonard. His baby brother. They have just been themselves since their parents died. Leonard might only just be seventeen but he had a way of making her feel better whenever she was sad. Leonard had been battling with kidney failure for a year now and he was long overdue for surgery.
“Hey_ what are you doing here? You should be out there having fun. It's still your birthday right?” Leonard asked as he struggled to sit up when he saw his sister enter the room.
“Yeah, it is still my birth, I still have now till middle night” Amanda faked a smile as she answered and sat beside him.
“Then what are you doing here_ go on. Go have some fun. I was not expecting you till tomorrow”
“I wanted to_ I planned to. I have waited so long to” Amanda replied as he fought back her tears.
“Then go and have all the fun you want. You only live once. So many of us want to but we can't_ you Madi please go and enjoy your day. You should not be here” Leonard said. He could tell his sister was troubled but he didn't want to know why. He only wanted her happy even if it was for a few hours.
“Leo_ I can't it's hard_ I tried_”
“Keep trying_ whatever the problem is, you will tell me all about it tomorrow, but today you must have fun. Now go, you still have till midnight” Leonard said and managed a smile to put a smile on his face that had gone pale from kidney disease.
Amanda smiled and then laughed as Leonard smiled back, nothing makes her happier than when he smiles.
Amanda left Leonard and went to a bar. She was going to have fun and she was doing it alone with some beers.
Amanda was on her third bottle of beer when a man took the stool beside her by the bar counter.
He was a much older man, looked above fifty, handsome, and for a man of his age he looked fit and well-built. She began to study him as she drank her beer. She was drunk and never in her life had this much alcohol. The more she stared at the fine old man as he sipped his whisky the more familiar and attractive he looked.
Wiliam was messing with her brain, she quickly shut her eyes and opened them again to get William out of her vision as she wondered why on earth would a strange man in a bar be looking like her ex-boyfriend.
“Hi,” she said to the man before she could stop herself.
He turned and stared at her for a while before responding
“Hi”
Amanda smiled, his deep voice was alluring and her head was spinning as she questioned what she was up to. Her body and her thoughts were pushing her to do something she would normally not do. But she was tired of being normal and she wanted to have some fun. If William could cheat on her with an older woman he calls mom, why can't she do the same with the beautiful man by her side?
“I like you,” Amanda announced from nowhere.
The man smiled and sipped his drink. It's been a while since a woman said that to him. Not that they don't try, he doesn't just entertain them.
“You clearly are drunk,” he tells her. A flirtation from a very young woman was something he didn't get often.
“Yes, I am. I have had three bottles” she admitted racing the bottle
“But I like you. Your smile is friendly and it makes me want to kiss you” Amanda advanced but the man moved back.
He laughed. She looked so young and innocent when, She said that and he believed it was an honest compliment, however, she was drunk and he didn't want to take advantage of her.
“You want to kiss me?” he asked.
“Yes,” she answered with a grin.
“Rather than let you kiss me I would like to take you home” he offered.
Amanda smiled in amazement at how easy that had worked out. He was offering to take her home, and that was exactly what she wanted.
Amanda staggered as the old man helped her into the back seat of his car and hopped in after her.
“Your address?” he asked.
Amanda glared in confusion.
“My driver will need your address to take you home to your apartment. It's not safe to leave you out there in this state” he explained.
Amanda was disappointed she thought the the man was going to take her to his place.
“Please take me to your place” she begged, putting her lips on his. And began to kiss him.
