Shawn There was something different about Lila Monday morning. I noticed it before she even saw me. She was standing at her locker with Nina, laughing about something while trying to shove a book into an already overstuffed backpack. The hallway around them was crowded, loud, and exactly the same as it had been every morning since freshman year, but Lila wasn’t pressed against the lockers trying to make herself smaller. She wasn’t watching everybody else like they belonged somewhere she didn’t. She was just there. Taking up space. And apparently that was enough to make me stop in the middle of a conversation with David. “Dude.” I looked over. “What?” David followed my line of sight and smirked. “You’re doing it again.” “Doing what?” “That stupid boyfriend stare.” Billy laughed
