ALEXANDER I stood by the bedside, arms folded, my eyes fixed on Faye’s face as Mrs. Adams moved about. Irene stood beside me, restless, wringing her hands and shifting her weight from one foot to the other. Every now and then, she would lean closer to me and whisper in a worried voice, “Why is she taking so long? Why isn’t she saying anything? Do you think she'll be alright?” I didn’t have the answers, though she looked at me as if I ought to.
