You Can’t Hide Forever

343 Words
We didn’t stop until the city lights faded behind us. Ethan drove with one hand on the wheel, the other gripping mine as though letting go would erase me. The silence between us was heavy, filled with things unsaid and fears neither of us dared voice. “You shouldn’t have come back,” I finally said. He glanced at me. “I couldn’t stay away.” “You risked everything.” “I already lost everything,” he replied quietly. “Walking away from you was the worst mistake of my life.” I swallowed hard, tears blurring my vision. “She won’t stop.” “I know.” We arrived at a small roadside motel just before dawn. It wasn’t much, but it was far from the city—and for now, it was safe. Inside the dimly lit room, exhaustion hit me all at once. I sank onto the bed, my body trembling as the fear finally loosened its grip. Ethan knelt in front of me. “I’m sorry,” he said softly. “I should have protected you sooner.” I shook my head. “We both made choices.” He hesitated. “There’s something you need to know.” My heart sank. “Ethan…” “My parents,” he continued, “they’re not done. Lydia isn’t acting alone.” The words settled heavily between us. Before I could respond, his phone buzzed. A message from an unknown number. You can’t hide forever. Another followed. One of you will have to choose who suffers. My blood ran cold. Ethan’s jaw tightened as he read the screen. “She’s forcing a final move,” he said. “And this time… someone’s going to pay.” A knock sounded at the motel door. Three sharp taps. Too deliberate. Too soon. Ethan reached for me, his eyes dark with resolve. “No matter what happens,” he said, “remember this—I choose you.” The door handle turned. And everything we were fighting for stood on the edge of collapse.
