No Safe Place Left

The knock didn’t come again. Instead, there was silence—thick, deliberate, and terrifying. Ethan moved first, quietly guiding me behind him as he stepped toward the motel door. His hand slipped into his jacket, pulling out his phone, thumb hovering over the emergency dial. I could see the tension in his shoulders, the way every muscle in his body prepared for impact. “Stay behind me,” he whispered. The door creaked open slowly. No one was there. The hallway was empty, the yellow lights flickering softly as if nothing had happened at all. But instinct told me this wasn’t over. Lydia never knocked without a reason. Ethan shut the door and locked it, then checked the window, pulling the curtains tight. Only then did he turn to me. “She’s playing with us,” I said quietly. “Yes,” he replied. “And that’s what scares me.” I sat on the edge of the bed, my hands clenched together so tightly my fingers hurt. “I can’t keep running like this.” Ethan crouched in front of me. “Then we stop.” I shook my head. “You don’t understand. She doesn’t want distance. She wants control. If we fight openly, she’ll hurt someone else.” He was silent for a moment, then said, “Then we take away her leverage.” Before I could ask what he meant, his phone buzzed again. This time, it wasn’t an unknown number. It was his mother. He stared at the screen for a long time before answering. “What do you want?” Her voice came through calm, almost gentle. “Come home, Ethan. End this madness.” “I won’t,” he said. “Not without her.” A pause. Then, colder, “Then you leave us no choice.” The call ended. I felt dread settle deep in my chest. “That sounded like a threat.” “It was,” he said softly. That night, we barely slept. Every sound made me flinch. Every passing car felt like a warning. Just before dawn, Ethan finally spoke again. “We need help,” he said. “Someone Lydia can’t silence.” “Who?” He looked at me. “Claire.”
