The blade of sunlight fell into the orphanage, morning came. The orphans were left to sleep until when ever they want. Max opened his eyes to see sunlight shining into the orphanage. He yawned and looked out the window. The sky was as blue as the sea, fluffy clouds roamed the sky like white sheep in herds. It was a good day, but Max couldn’t lift his spirits up, the sun seemed too bright, the clouds made seemed as if it would rain.
“Thank you, Max. We’ll come back tomorrow for your ‘crime’.” The words that Mr Brown had said kept replaying in Max’s mind. ‘Crime’… What would happen to him, part of him felt nervous but part of hi also felt dread.
“Good morning, Max.” Lucas muttered half asleep, “Good luck. You’ll need it!”
Max smiled grimly and nodded in agreement.
“Max, come out quickly!” Mr beckon ordered harshly from outside, “Mr Smiths arrived!”
Max quickly got dressed and hurried outside.
Mr Smiths didn’t change, he was wearing the same dark blue police outfit, he wore the same serious expression. To Max, Mr Smiths seemed like an unpredictable monster, with power to end Max’s life.
“Max, hello again.” Mr Smiths broke into a tiny smile, “How do you feel?”
“Normal.” Max muttered trying to not show his panic.
“Come with me Max and Mr Beckon to the police station.” Mr Smiths ordered, “The car is outside.”
“What right now?!” Mr Beckon complained nervously.
Max had never been in a police car. No matter how he moved around he felt uncomfortable, he felt trapped like he was already sent to jail. Max glanced at Mr Beckon who was trying to calm himself down. Like Max, he had never been in situations like this. After all, he was only a man who ran an orphanage in the edge or a village. Almost nobody ever comes there, nothing exciting or dangerous ever happens.
Mr Beckons wound began to heal, although doctors had suggested him to keep his bandage up, but he insisted to be brave and take it off. Now a dark ready cut remains. When ever Max looked at the cut, his stomach did a flip, he didn’t mean it! Would anyone understand his feelings? He thought with dread.
“We have arrived.” Mr Smiths’ announcement interrupted Max’s thought, he heard a click as the door got swung open by Mr Beckon. Max followed him out and into the gigantic double glass door of the police station. Although he still felt nervous, but the ride had given him time to calm down and think. Once he got into the station the fascinating scene almost made Max forget why he was there. Everything was new to Max in the police station. He scanned around like an owl. There were people everywhere. A thin layer of glass was the only thing that separated hundreds of artificial intelligence robots who were identifying the importance of crimes. The world wasn’t peaceful since a robotic scientist invented a robotic arm that can accurately pinch tiny to big item. Max gathered when asking about why where the robots so busy. The robotic arms were intended to be used for dangerous experiments, but Pocket Pickers got the advantage and began using it to steal items.
“Human polices such as us only deal with situations when we have to go the crime scene.” Mr Smiths explained, when Max asked him about other polices.
Unlike Max, Mr Beckon got more nervous. Drops of sweat began to form on his forehead even though it was almost freezing in the police station. His eyes darted around as if he was afraid of something would attack him.
“That way is the court.” Mr Smiths pointed.
Max gulped and asked worried, “We are going in the court!?”
He looked at Mr Smiths hoping to see that he’s joking, but all he saw was Mr Smiths’ serious expression.
Finally, Mr Beckon said something in the whole journey, “Will my trail be any different if I admit my error and promise that it would never happen again.” Mr Beckon asked Mr Smiths without any hope in his voice.
“I’m sorry, but I think you and Max’s trails are already decided.” Mr Smiths admitted, “I say that there will not be much of a change.”
“Then tell me what would happen to me!” Max asked as if it was an order.
“You’ll see.” Mr Smiths smiled a bit and lightly shoved Mr Beckon and Max inside the court room.
Again, Max got the attention that he hated the most.
