Chapter 4

Time has come and gone, and the minutes for Kataleya went by slower than she expected. She finished the preparations, carried out her duty as luna to the pack. At least for the last time. Much to her relief, everyone obeyed her instructions as the Alpha was expecting nothing but perfection for tonight’s celebration. It was going to be for the new heir that will take over the pack after Tritan’s reign, and tonight, at least for tonight, all members of the pack did not stand in the luna’s way. When it came to grand preparations, a ball celebrating even grander occasions, only Kataleya could do it with ease and finesse. The previous ones were a success whenever she hosted it. Kataleya finalized everything, hand picked every color and design for the ball from the chandelier to wine glasses. Every detail was important. Kataleya knew it would be the grandest she had ever done yet. However, she felt a pang in her heart she could not ignore. What Tritan didn’t know was that this would be Kataleya’s parting gift. She thought of it as a farewell party to go with celebrating his first heir. After this, she would cut her ties, and end her suffering permanently. Her death would also be part of it. It was the only thing she could give, whether or not Tritan accepts it. She doubted he would. Which makes it the sweetest gift of all. It would be her only revenge, and her freedom. Her death, she believed, would drive Tritan to the brink of insanity—if not a whirlwind of regrets. Alpha Tritan may act like she repulsed him in front of the pack, but even the slightest touch makes him wild and insatiable for Kataleya. Hence why she was still luna. He forced her to keep the title when she offered to hand it to his true mate and mistress, Diane. Yes, Diane was Alpha Tritan’s true mate. Everyone was shocked. For an omega to be destined to an Alpha, it was truly uncommon and taboo to even acknowledge it. So, when Kataleya heard about it, she was eager to make a proposition. That night, she entered his office with trembling hands. Excitement coursed through her, anyone could see it in her eyes and that which immediately grabbed Alpha Tritan’s attention. He wasn’t sure why she looked so happy, but he did not like the way her eyes gleamed above her rose-tinted cheeks, because it was not him that caused it. “I want to make an offer.” Kataleya had said, her smile even reached her ears at that moment. Alpha Tritan motioned his fingers, gesturing for her to come forward, and she did. “What is it?” he c****d his brow, studying every shift in her facial expressions. “Your mate… you found her, am I right?” Kataleya asked, looking directly into his eyes. Time and time again, those blue streaks somehow left Tritan lovestruck and astonished. Kataleya was the only one who could do that. No one looked straight into his eyes because he forbade them to. And just now, he commanded Diane to do the same. He did not care if it hurt his mate. He knew it hurt her deeply. He’d felt it through the bond, and he’d expected it. He had been preparing himself for the day to come when he would meet his destined mate, yet he made sure it will change nothing between him and Kataleya. He only wanted those striking blue eyes gazing into him directly, whether or not they were in bed. His mate would become his sidepiece. Not his luna. “Yes, what of it?” Alpha Tritan raised his brow at her, tapping one finger against his wooden table. “She deserves to be luna.” That was all she had to say. At first, Alpha Tritan stared at her without uttering a word. He didn’t blink, just stared. Kataleya hesitated, but forced herself to continue. “It’s tradition that all Alpha’s destined mates must become lunas of their packs. And… well…” Kataleya hesitated as she gazed into the rage burning in his eyes. His fist slammed heavily down the table. Kataleya doesn’t flinch. Instead, she watched with her entire body frozen in place as Alpha Tritan rose to his feet. His body emanated raw power no one could contest, yet she stood there for a moment, unmoving, and the next, he had wrapped his hand around her throat. “You are not leaving me, Kataleya.” He growled, his breath hot on her neck as his grip tightens around her throat. Her eyes widen, not expecting this to be his reaction. She thought he’d be happy. How she thought wrong. Tears prick Kataleya’s eyes, fighting them back from flowing freely. “Diane may be my mate, but you are my luna.” He exhaled, his breath slithering down her neck to her spine, but she stood firm as she looked into his eyes. Alpha Tritan, stunned with her fierce and unwavering gaze directed at him, threw her to the floor. Had she not spread her hands catching herself from the fall, her head would have hit the floor first. “Never speak of such things again!” He growled then stormed away. Without another word. Kataleya stared after his back, lost, depraved. She dropped her eyes, feeling defeated. Feeling naïve for thinking he would change just because he had finally met his destined mate. That he would simply let her go. Just like that. How wrong she was. How could she have been so stupid? The day he killed her father, his mask came off, revealing his true self and the monster he really was. But it was too late. Kataleya had fallen for him long before she discovered what lurked beneath his mask. Alpha Tritan, who had captured her heart, betrayed her soon after their wedding vows were said, and thrust her to the duties of a luna while being forbidden to mourn her father’s death. But no more. Tonight, when it’s all over, she won’t have to mourn because she will be together with him above the midnight sky. Where the moon goddess protects them and lives for them, like her father always used to say. So, tonight she shan’t frown. She will celebrate. Then, she will live a life of her own. Far away from everything. Far away from him. The preparations are done. She watched everything be put into place according to her instructions. No one stood around frolicking about the pack house because in a few minutes, the guest they have been all waiting for will arrive. The Lycan King, she remembered. It’s a shame she will never get to meet him, even if their meeting would turn out to be insignificant. She was no one, after all. Keeping that in mind, she slipped away from the halls, through the doors leading her to the deep lake just nearby. She looked towards the gates. Guards swarmed the walls in full alert, as they always have since Alpha Tritan tightened their security. Kataleya smiled. She had lost count of the number of times she tried to escape those walls. Each time, Alpha Tritan found her and brought her back. Somehow, she knew he loved finding her there, watching her eyes fill with horror as she stared up at him in defiance. He loved giving her the consequences of her failure. The price being her body which he’d dominated and broke. She was irreparable. The lake before her glistened beautifully under the full moon tonight. In the distance, she could hear their howls and cheers as the long-awaited guest finally arrived. She blocked out the noises, took off her shoes, and let out a breath. Then, she lifted her leg and walked towards the waters, beckoning her to become one with them. For once, her body relaxed, although the wounds she retained burned like hell, she focused on the cold fluid that now surrounds her. . . . Suddenly, she heard voices. A soft, yet masculine whisper flowing through the stream of her consciousness. “Wake up, my queen.”
