"Way too dangerous," Gwen muttered to herself.
She mocked her own stupid life. Her instincts screamed that she was insane for being here again at Professor Lucien's door. This was the place she had run away from in fear, and now she was back. She pulled out her phone and stared at Lucien's number, hesitating.
If Lucien killed her tonight, would it matter? Maybe not. Running wasn't an option. Her mother's life was on the line, she had to save her.
The phone connected.
"Yes?" Lucien's voice was low and rough. It sent a chill down Gwen's spine.
"I'm here," Gwen whispered.
"Get in."
Gwen hung up and took a breath. She walked toward the building. Before she could ring the bell, the door beeped and slid open.
Inside, the place was huge and intimidating. Her eyes landed on Lucien in the kitchen, pouring a drink. He was tall and built like he could snap someone's neck with a snap of his fingers. Tattoos ran across his bare chest under a red robe. Lucien looked terrifying. That stare cut straight through Gwen.
"Uhm... the money," Gwen cleared her throat. "You said you'd give me a hundred thousand if I came over?"
Lucien picked up his phone, tapped on the screen, and Gwen's phone buzzed.
A hundred thousand dollars had been sent to her.
Was there anything this creepy man didn't know about her? How did he get her bank details?
"Money's the first thing on your mind?" Lucien turned and faced her. "You're that desperate?"
Gwen's heart thumped. The dim light hit Lucien's face, sharpening his jaw and clean features. Gwen didn't realize she had been staring too long.
"You should take a picture, you know," Lucien smirked. "It'll last longer."
"Huh?" Gwen looked away, cursing inwardly. She fidgeted. "I... um... I need it for my mom's hospital bills," she said quietly.
"Weak humans," Lucien muttered.
"Thanks for the money," Gwen said, even though the words stuck in her throat.
Lucien had saved her before, and now this. She was grateful, even if she hated it.
She thought about what that money could cover. Her debt. Her mother's treatment. She could probably get a new apartment.
But it also scared her. What did Lucien actually want from her?
"Come with me," Lucien said and walked into the bedroom.
The room was all gray walls and glass, with city lights outside. The bed was messy and huge, covered in dark silk sheets. Gwen noticed it then.
Condoms. A red lace panty. A white shirt.
All scattered on the floor.
She swallowed hard. The room had a distinct smell, and she didn't want to think about what had happened there.
"Do you intend to stand there all night?" Lucien's voice cut through the silence.
Gwen forced herself to step inside. The air felt heavy. Lucien's stare moved over her, and she hated how exposed it made her feel.
"What are you going to do with me now?" Gwen asked, her eyes on the floor.
Lucien stood and walked toward her slowly. Each step made Gwen's hands shake.
"Do you feel it?" Lucien asked.
Gwen frowned. "What?"
"The pull between us."
"I... I don't know what you mean," Gwen said, trying to step back, but Lucien closed the distance between them.
"I tried with someone else," Lucien said, his voice low. "It didn't work. It's you I keep thinking about."
Gwen's back hit the wall. Anxiety rolled through her. Lucien placed his hands on the wall on either side of her head. She felt trapped there.
Gwen's thoughts spun. Yeah, she knew this was wrong. She knew she had to get away from a man as dangerous as Lucien, but her legs stayed rooted to the floor.
Lucien leaned in closer, gazing at her with such intensity that Gwen's breath caught. She opened her mouth to say something, but the words wouldn't come out. She shoved at Lucien's chest with everything she had. It did nothing.
Lucien's expression darkened. He grabbed her wrists and slammed them above her head against the wall. Pain shot through her arms. A low sound rumbled in his throat, warning and cold. Goosebumps raced down her spine.
Lucien's lips moved to her neck, brushing against her skin.
Gwen's knees weakened. Her teeth gritted as she tried to stop the moan that tore through her throat. Gwen felt the heat of him, and her stomach knotted. Her hands curled into fists at her sides as she tried to stay still. Lucien's fingers slid into her hair and tilted her head back just enough to trap her gaze.
Gwen's breathing sped up. For half a second, Gwen saw Lucien's eyes flash silver-grey, sharp and inhuman. It froze her. Her heart skipped as he stared down at her like she was prey.
Gwen couldn't move under that stare.
Then his voice dropped low, rough, and demanding.
"Strip."
Gwen went still. Every muscle locked. She stared at Lucien, breathing hard, her chest rising fast. The word hung between them like a threat. She didn't move.
She set her jaw and forced herself to hold his gaze. "No."
Lucien's grip tightened on her wrists until her bones ached. The air became heavy and dangerous. Neither of them backed down. The silence stretched until Gwen thought she might shatter from it.
