Chapter 8: The hunt begins

1017 Words
The flames crackled in the fire pit as the cult members tore into the charred remains of the girl, their bloodstained faces lit by the flickering light. Emily’s heart pounded in her chest as she watched them feast, her body coiled with tension. Beside her, Amber sat as still as stone, eyes scanning the clearing, waiting for the moment. They both knew it was now or never. "Get ready," Amber whispered, her voice barely audible over the sounds of the grotesque feast. Emily nodded, swallowing hard. She could feel the eyes of the cult on them even though they hadn’t been marked for death—yet. But it was only a matter of time before they were next. They had to move now. Amber gave her a sharp nod, and in an instant, they both bolted from the edge of the clearing, darting into the thick underbrush. Emily’s breath came in short, sharp gasps as branches and brambles snagged at her clothes, but she didn’t stop. They had to get as far away as possible, as quickly as possible. Every second mattered. For a fleeting moment, Emily thought they might actually make it. The sounds of the cult’s feast began to fade behind them, the thick woods swallowing them in darkness. But then, a shout pierced the air, cutting through her brief hope like a knife. "Hey! They’re running!" a man’s voice yelled from the clearing. Emily’s stomach dropped. Footsteps pounded behind them, followed by another voice—Henry's voice, thick with fury. "Don’t let them get away!" His command was filled with rage and certainty, and Emily’s blood turned to ice. The sounds of pursuit grew louder. Emily pushed herself harder, her legs burning as she ran through the woods, dodging trees and low-hanging branches. Beside her, Amber was panting heavily, her pace faltering slightly as exhaustion began to take its toll. Suddenly, a loud crack echoed through the trees—gunfire. Emily’s heart lurched, and she glanced back over her shoulder just in time to see Henry pull a 9mm handgun from his waistband, his eyes locked on them with murderous intent. Another shot rang out, this time closer. "Go, go, go!" Amber urged, her voice shaking with both fear and urgency. But before Emily could respond, another shot cracked through the night air, and Amber let out a cry of pain. She stumbled, clutching her arm as blood began to seep through her fingers. "No!" Emily gasped, grabbing Amber before she could fall to the ground. She looked at Amber’s arm—it was bad, the bullet had torn through her flesh, and she was bleeding badly. But Amber’s eyes were fierce, determined. "Keep going," Amber gasped, her voice strained. "Don’t stop." Despite the pain, Amber kept moving, her pace slowing but her will still strong. Emily gritted her teeth, wrapping an arm around Amber to support her. Together, they pushed forward, deeper into the woods. Behind them, Henry’s shouts grew more distant, but the danger was far from over. They ran until Emily’s lungs burned and her legs felt like they might give out beneath her. The moon hung high in the sky, casting just enough light for them to see the path ahead. Finally, they stumbled upon an old, abandoned barn nestled between the trees, its weathered wood barely visible in the shadows. "Here," Emily whispered, guiding Amber toward the barn. The two girls limped toward the structure, slipping inside through a cracked door that hung crookedly on its hinges. The air inside was musty and thick with dust, but it was quiet—safe, for now. Emily helped Amber to the ground, leaning her against a pile of rotting hay. Amber’s face was pale, her arm slick with blood. "Let me see," Emily said, her voice trembling. She tore off a strip of her shirt and tied it tightly around Amber’s arm, doing her best to stop the bleeding. Amber winced but didn’t complain. "We’re not...far enough," Amber gasped, her eyes darting toward the door. "They’ll be searching the woods soon." Emily’s chest tightened, fear gnawing at her. "You’re hurt. We need to rest, at least for tonight." Amber nodded weakly, her body slumping against the wall. "Just for tonight. Tomorrow, we have to move." Emily sank down beside her, her own exhaustion catching up with her. The reality of what had just happened settled over her like a crushing weight. They had made it this far, but the hunt wasn’t over. Not even close. The distant sounds of the cult members echoed faintly through the trees, but for now, they were hidden, out of sight. Emily leaned her head back against the wall of the barn, her body trembling with adrenaline and fear. Her thoughts drifted briefly to Coco, her beloved dog. Was he safe? Did he sense that something was wrong, that she wasn’t coming home? Emily clenched her fists, forcing the thought away. She couldn’t think about that now. She had to survive, for him, for her dad, for herself. "We’ll make it," she whispered, mostly to herself. Amber gave a faint smile, her breathing shallow. "Yeah... we will." As the night stretched on, Emily kept watch, her eyes scanning the darkness outside. They weren’t safe yet. But for now, they had a moment of respite, a brief pause in the chaos of their escape. Emily’s hands trembled as she knelt beside Amber, her eyes locking onto the wound in her arm, blood seeping through Amber’s fingers. Without thinking, she grabbed the hem of her shirt and ripped it with all the strength she had left, the fabric tearing with a harsh sound. Her breathing was ragged, but she quickly twisted the torn strip into a makeshift bandage. Pressing it against Amber’s arm, she wrapped it tightly around the wound, her fingers fumbling with the knot as she tied it off. The blood soaked through the fabric almost immediately, but it was the best she could do. “Hold on,” Emily whispered, her voice barely steady. “This will stop the bleeding, at least for now.”
