Chapter 2

I was about to investigate when an argument broke out beyond the door. "Move! Mr. Grant Renshaw left something in there. If it goes missing, you'll be the ones answering for it!" "I'm sorry, but Mr. Dylan Renshaw is resting inside. No one is allowed to disturb him!" "Mr. Dylan Renshaw? He's a bastard who isn't even allowed to come home." "Say that again. I dare you!" Grant's assistant and Dylan's were having it out in the hallway. Their two groups had reached a standoff and were on the verge of coming to blows when an authoritative voice cut through the noise. "Everyone, move." The hallway went silent. Then the lock clicked open. I huddled beneath the covers, my palms growing damp. A few seconds later, light flooded the dark room. I rubbed my eyes as if I'd just been woken, then let out an ear-splitting scream at the sight of the crowd standing around me. "I... I..." My lips trembled, and I couldn't get a word out. Once I'd recovered enough to move, I instinctively pulled the covers tight around my body. I was already fully dressed, with my shirt buttoned all the way up, but if I was going to put on a show, I had to commit. "It's not what you think." I opened my mouth again, then bit my lip and fell silent, looking as though I couldn't bring myself to explain. I looked every bit the helpless young woman, too scared to fight back. Then everyone's gaze shifted to Grant. I'd stolen the covers, leaving him completely naked, his hard abs and impressive package on full display. Everyone gave us a knowing look. My father, who'd been standing at the back, squeezed through the crowd to Victor's side with a hearty laugh. "Oh, they're young! It's only natural. This was bound to happen sooner or later anyway, wasn't it, Mr. Renshaw? We'll be family soon." He patted Victor's hand and shot me a triumphant look. Victor put his hands behind his back and said nothing. His stern expression gave no indication of whether he was pleased. He stared hard at Grant for a moment, then swept out without a word. The large room fell quiet. I replayed Victor's reaction in my head. Something about it didn't quite add up. He had been the one to propose an alliance between the Sutton family and the Renshaw family. Yet finding Grant and me in bed together so soon seemed to have caught him off guard, and he hadn't looked entirely happy about it. 'He wants the marriage alliance, but he doesn't want me with Grant?' I was still trying to work that out when Grant, who'd been unconscious beside me all this time, suddenly woke up.
