Chapter 2: The Silence After

533 Words
No one followed me. Not a single wolf dared, even as I walked through the pack grounds and past warriors, elders, and omegas alike. The usual whispers didn’t come. No insults. No pity. Just silence. They didn’t understand what they had just witnessed. Good. They weren’t supposed to. By the time I reached the edge of the forest, I didn’t slow. I didn’t look back. I didn’t hesitate. If I did, even for a second, the bond might try to reconnect—and I couldn’t risk that. Not now. Not when I was this close. The trees swallowed me whole, shadows stretching long beneath the moonlight as the distance between me and the pack grew. My breathing steadied, my thoughts sharpening as I moved deeper into the dark. And then— Pain. Sharp and sudden, cutting straight through my chest. I stopped instantly, pressing my hand against the centre of my ribs. That wasn’t supposed to happen. The bond was gone. I had severed it completely. I had felt it break. So why— Another pulse hit. Stronger this time. Not a connection. Not the familiar pull of a mate bond. Something else. Something twisted. Something entirely new. My eyes narrowed as I straightened slowly. “…What did you do?” The voice came from behind me. Low. Controlled. Dangerous. I turned. Kael stood at the edge of the trees, his presence filling the space like a storm gathering just beneath the surface. He shouldn’t have been here. He should have stayed. Celebrated. Moved on. Forgotten me. Instead, he looked at me like something had gone terribly wrong. I tilted my head slightly. “Shouldn’t you be with your pack, Alpha?” His jaw tightened. “You’re not leaving.” “I already have.” His gaze dropped briefly to my chest—where the bond used to be—before returning to my eyes. “You’re still connected to me.” I almost smiled. Almost. “No,” I said quietly. “You’re connected to me.” That was the moment it hit him. I saw it in the way his posture shifted, in the way his control slipped just slightly beneath the surface. His expression hardened, but something deeper had already been unsettled. “You’re lying.” “Am I?” Another pulse hit between us—stronger now, sharper. This time, I saw him feel it. His breath hitched just slightly, barely noticeable, but enough. Good. “You rejected me,” I continued. “Which means you should feel nothing.” Silence. “Do you?” He didn’t answer. Didn’t need to. I stepped closer, closing the distance between us, and for the first time, I let him feel it. Not the bond. Not the illusion he believed in. Something deeper. Something older. Something he didn’t understand. His eyes darkened instantly. “What. Did. You. Do.” I leaned in slightly, my voice lowering. “I set myself free.” Then I stepped back. And this time— I didn’t stop walking. Behind me, Kael didn’t follow. But I knew something worse had happened. Because the moment I crossed deeper into the forest— The connection didn’t fade. It tightened.
