Chapter 5: The Bond That Bends

He didn’t leave. That was the first problem. The second— Neither did I. We stood facing each other in the clearing, the space between us thick with something neither of us could ignore anymore. The connection had changed again—not volatile, not unstable, but something far worse. It was settling. “You’re still here,” he said. “I never said I was hiding.” “You’re running.” “No,” I replied evenly. “I’m thinking.” His eyes narrowed slightly. “About how to fix this?” “About whether I want to.” That stopped him. Just long enough to matter. Then his expression hardened again. “That’s not your decision anymore.” I almost smiled. “You keep saying that.” “And you keep being wrong.” Another pulse moved between us—cleaner now, more defined. Kael felt it too. I saw it in the way his posture shifted, in the way his control sharpened instead of breaking. “You feel that,” he said. “Yes.” “It’s not weakening.” “No.” Silence. Because now there was no denying it. This wasn’t temporary. This wasn’t something that would fade with time or distance. It was becoming something permanent. “You’re not leaving,” he said again. “You’re not letting this go.” “No.” “Why?” His gaze darkened, something deeper surfacing beneath the control. “Because it’s mine.” The moment the words left his mouth, the connection reacted—but not violently this time. Not painfully. Something else. Something deeper. I stilled, my breath catching slightly despite myself. Kael felt it too. “…What was that?” he asked. I didn’t answer. Because I already knew. The connection wasn’t resisting him anymore. It was responding. And that— That was never part of the plan.
