Chapter 2

1105 Words
I couldn’t sleep last night. I was tossing and turning all night thinking about what happened. I never would have expected something like to happen to me. Was it my fault? Did I do or say something to make him think I was interested? Did I lead him on in some way? I knew Carter had a reputation with being a ladies man but I never thought he would do something like that. I could tell my friends knew something was wrong last night on the way home but we just sat in silence listening to the radio the whole ride back and I’m glad they didn’t pressure me to talk. How can I tell anyone what happened? It’s not like anything can be done about it even if they did believe me. He is the alpha’s son and future alpha of our pack. It’s better if I just keep quiet and try to avoid him as much as possible. I decide to get out of bed and head downstairs to get something to eat. It’s Saturday so I plan on just staying home all day and watching some tv. I head to my bathroom to brush my teeth. I threw my hair into a loose braid and go downstairs to the kitchen. My mom is in the kitchen cleaning up from breakfast. She turns to look at me when I walk in. I sit down at the table across from my brother, who is finishing up eating his food. He looks up at me and gives me a nod when I plop myself down in the chair. I don’t see my dad so he probably had to go into work. Being the Beta, my dad gets called into work at anytime even on weekends. “ Good morning honey you’re up late. I saved you some breakfast” my mom said handing me the plate of food. “ Thanks mom. Yeah I guess I did sleep later than usual. Did dad have to go into work?” I ask while picking up a piece of bacon. “ Yes he left early this morning “ she says looking at me with a concerned look on her face. “ You feeling ok?” she asked. “ I’m fine mom.” I say trying to avoid eye contact. “I think I’m just tired from the party” I say glancing over at my brother. He gives me a questioning look like he knows I’m lying but doesn’t say anything. “ Alright” she says not sounding entirely convinced. “Since you both are here what do you want to do for your birthday coming up? Should we invite your friends and have a party?” she asked. I cringe at the thought of being at another party. “ I’m fine with it being just us four mom. We don’t need to throw a party. It’s just another birthday we don’t need to make a big deal”. I say “ oh nonsense! it’s you and your brother’s eighteenth birthday of course it’s a big deal. We can have it here at the house in the back yard. It doesn’t have to be big just invite some of your friends and we can have a cook out.” she says with excitement. “ I party might be fun. It will probably be the last one we have.” my brother chimes in. Thanks for having my back I think to myself. “ See that’s the spirit. Well it’s settle then. You both just let me know who you want to invite so I know how much food to get.” my mom replies. I just look at her with a half smile and stab my eggs with my fork. After breakfast I head back up to my room. I shut the door behind me and throw myself onto my bed. Another party, just what I need. I don’t think I can talk her out of it without her asking more questions that I don’t want to give answers to. I hear a knock on the door and I sit up as my brother peaks his head in. “ Hey what’s up”? I ask sitting up on the bed. “ Nothing. Just seeing what you are up to. Some people said you left in a hurry last night and downstairs you were acting kind of funny. You ok?” he asks. “ Yeah I’m fine. I just wasn’t feeling good and wanted to go home.” I say hoping he can’t see right through my lie. “ Alright, well you know you can tell me if there is something wrong” he says. “ I know thanks. I think I’m just nervous about us turning eighteen and you know the whole shifting ordeal. They say the first shift is painful.” I say which is actually not a lie. I have been thinking about it lately. “ Yeah that’s what they say, but we will have each other to get through it don’t worry.” he says with a smile. “ You’re right at least we have someone to experience it with instead of on our own like most wolves.” I say pulling the blanket over me. I am glad I have someone to go through this with. My brother and I have always been close and not just because we are twins. We have always understood each other and have similar personalities. Our looks are very similar as well. We both have the same brown hair and blue eyes and same facial features. We get our looks from our mom. My brother inherited his 6’2 height from our dad though and I’m on the shorter side at 5’5. “ Well I’m heading out. I’m going to play basketball with some of the guys. I’ll see ya later” he says walking to the door. “ Ok, Hey Nick who are you inviting to the party?” I ask even though I already know the answer. “ Probably just the usual Carter, Ian and a few of the other guys. Why? he asks. I stiffen at the mention of Carter’s name. “ No reason, just wondering. See ya later” I say. “ See ya”. he closes the door behind him. I slide down onto the bed and pull the covers up to my chin. I let the tears fall. So much for avoiding him. At least I will be at my house surrounded by my family. I will just make sure I keep my distance and won’t be anywhere alone with him.
