Aria. The sun lowered in the sky, casting a long golden shadow across the empty playground. The sound of laughter from the kids faded one by one and the low hum of parents pulling out of the parking lot. I stood off to the side, arms folded and watching him. Kai moved from car to car helping a little boy buckle his seatbelt in the back seat, and then lifted another girl into her mother’s SUV like she weighed nothing. I watched one of the moms smile at Kai and placed a palm over his shoulder, muttering thank you before she went into the driver’s seat. Kai was smiling, genuinely and it looked so out of place that I didn’t know what to do with the feeling curling in my stomach. Kai headed towards another car where one of the boys leaned out his dads car window, waving a tiny hand.
