Trey waited until he heard the elevator descend fully before he grabbed the coffees and headed toward the bedroom with a grin he couldn’t wipe off his face.
He pushed the door open without knocking. “Rise and shine, lover boy. You’ve got some explaining to do.”
Alex stirred, squinting against the light. “T? What the hell, man? It’s too early for your shit.”
Trey set one coffee on the nightstand and leaned against the doorframe, arms crossed. “Early? It’s almost eight. And you’re going to want to hear this. I just ran into a very beautiful, very rumpled woman in your living room. Barefoot, heels in hand, hair looking like she spent the night getting absolutely railed. She bolted the second the elevator opened like I caught her robbing the place.”
Alex sat up instantly, the sheet pooling around his waist. “She was still here?”
“Barely. Looked equal parts embarrassed and devastated. Cute as hell though with a killer body, those hazel eyes… You really let her leave without even getting her number?”
Alex ran a hand down his face, a rare flicker of frustration crossing his features. “I was going to… f**k. I didn’t even get her name.”
Trey let out a low whistle. “Damn. That’s not like you. Usually you’re the one kicking them out before sunrise. She must’ve been something special.”
Alex didn’t answer right away. He stared at the empty side of the bed where Nyla had slept curled against him. The memory of her soft moans, the way she’d clung to him, the perfect fit of her curvy body against his, it was already haunting him.
“Yeah,” he said quietly. “She was.”
Trey raised an eyebrow, sensing the shift in his best friend’s mood. “You good?”
Alexander was already reaching for his phone. “I need to find her.”
***************
Nyla paid the cab driver and practically ran into her apartment building, ignoring the neighbor who waved hello. The moment her front door clicked shut behind her, the weight of the last twenty-four hours crashed down.
She kicked off her heels, leaving them abandoned by the door, and headed straight for the bathroom. Her hands trembled slightly as she turned on the shower, letting the water heat up until steam filled the small space.
She stripped off the black dress, the same one she had worn with such reckless confidence last night and stepped under the hot spray.
The water cascaded over her body, soothing her sore muscles. Bruises in the shape of fingerprints marked her hips.
Her n*****s were still slightly sensitive from Alexander’s mouth. Between her thighs, she felt the faint ache and stickiness that reminded her exactly how many times he had come inside her.
Nyla pressed her forehead against the cool tile and let the water run down her back.
What the hell is wrong with me?
Last night had felt liberating. Alexander had touched her like she was the most desirable woman on earth. He had made her come harder and more often than Max ever had.
For those few hours, she hadn’t thought about the proposal photos, the lies, or the two wasted years. She had only felt wanted and alive. Alex had put her s****l needs ahead of his and that was something she adored about it.
But now, in the harsh light of day, shame twisted in her gut.
She had done exactly what Max did, sought comfort and pleasure in someone else’s arms while still technically in a relationship. Even if it was already dead.
She didn’t even know the man’s full name. She had let a stranger f**k her without protection in the heat of the moment. What if he had a girlfriend? What if Miles was already laughing about it with him right now?
Tears mixed with the shower water.
She had always prided herself on being the loyal one. The good girlfriend. The one who believed in love. And yet, one night of pain had turned her into this woman who snuck out of a man’s penthouse with messy hair and no panties.
Still… she couldn’t fully regret it.
There was a way Alexander had looked at her like he wanted to devour her, like she was the only thing that mattered in that moment.
He had awakened something deep inside her. A hunger she didn’t know she possessed. Part of her wondered what would have happened if she had stayed.
If she had woken up next to him and let him pull her back into bed for round… whatever round they were on.
Nyla sighed heavily, reaching for her body wash. She scrubbed her skin thoroughly, trying to wash away the scent of him, the memory of his hands, the low groans he made when he came.
It didn’t work.
Even after she stepped out of the shower, wrapped in a towel, and stared at her reflection in the fogged mirror, she could still feel the ghost of his touch.
She didn’t know his last name. She didn’t know if she’d ever see him again.
And the worst part? A small, reckless part of her hoped she would.
After drying off, Nyla wrapped herself in her favorite oversized robe and collapsed onto her bed. Her phone had been on silent since last night.
When she finally turned it on, the flood of missed calls and messages from her friends made her stomach turn.
She ignored every single one. Instead, she opened her messages with her best friend, Jill.
Nyla: Hey… you awake? I did something really stupid last night. Can you help me get morning-after pills? Like… today? I’ll explain everything later. Promise.
She hit send and stared at the screen, biting her lip.
A minute later, her phone buzzed again. She assumed it was Jill, only that it wasn’t.
Max: Baby, I know you saw the photos. I can explain everything. But first… why was your phone pinged last night at Glacier tower for more than ten hours? And why the f**k are you asking for contraceptives? We need to talk. Now.
Her hands started shaking as she read the message again. How? Had he put a tracker on her phone? Had he been monitoring her this whole time while he was out proposing to another woman?
