The next day found Todd slouched in his college anatomy class, his mind far from the lecture on human physiology. Thoughts of Leslie, the mysterious woman he had encountered the previous night, occupied his every waking moment. He couldn't shake the memory of her captivating presence, her eyes like pools of twilight drawing him in.
Unbeknownst to Todd, Lisa, his friend and fellow pack member, noticed his distracted state. Nudging him on the arm, she shot him a curious glance, her amber eyes narrowing with suspicion. In their telepathic connection, she probed Todd's mind with a forceful message.
"Hey, Todd! What's going on with you? You seem even more out of it than usual."
Todd blinked, trying to compose himself as he turned to Lisa with a weak smile. "Just lost in thought, I guess. Didn't get much sleep last night."
Lisa's eyebrow quirked up in disbelief, her telepathic messages tinged with skepticism. "Didn't get much sleep, huh? More like didn't get much sleep because of a certain vampire encounter."
Todd's heart skipped a beat, his attempts to hide his feelings falling short in the face of Lisa's intuition. He shifted uncomfortably in his seat, hoping to steer the conversation away from dangerous territory.
"I have no idea what you're talking about, Lisa," Todd replied, his voice tinged with false nonchalance. "You're imagining things."
Lisa's gaze lingered on him for a moment longer, her suspicion evident even as she let the matter drop for now. "If you say so, Todd. Just don't let whatever distractions you have going on interfere with pack business. You missed the meeting last night, and you know Aiden doesn't take kindly to absences."
Todd winced inwardly at the mention of his older brother, Aiden, the next true Alpha in line. He knew he was already on thin ice with Aiden, his rebellious nature and tendency to question authority often putting him at odds with his brother's strict leadership style.
"I'll make it up to him," Todd promised, though he knew it wouldn't be easy. "I just had some...personal matters to attend to."
Lisa nodded, her expression softening with understanding. "Just be careful, Todd. Aiden's not one to forgive easily, especially when it comes to shirking your responsibilities."
Todd sighed, knowing Lisa was right. He couldn't afford to let his personal feelings cloud his judgment, especially not with the delicate balance between vampires and werewolves in Hollow Creek hanging in the balance. As the class continued, Todd resolved to tread carefully, lest his actions bring about consequences he couldn't undo.
As the lecture drew to a close, Professor Carlisle wrapped up with one of his trademark dad jokes, eliciting a few chuckles from the students. Todd and Lisa gathered their belongings, ready to head to the mess hall for lunch. Despite the earlier tension, the atmosphere between them had softened, and they walked side by side down the halls of Hollow Creek University.
"So, what's the plan for lunch?" Todd asked, trying to keep the conversation light.
Lisa shrugged, a small smile playing at the corners of her lips. "I was thinking maybe grabbing some sandwiches from the cafeteria. Nothing fancy, but it beats another round of instant ramen."
Todd chuckled in agreement. "Sounds good. You know, you could always join us for dinner at the pack house sometime. Aiden's been trying out some new recipes, and he could use a taste tester."
Lisa's smile faltered slightly at the mention of Aiden, her thoughts drifting to their strained relationship. "I don't know, Todd. Things have been a bit rocky between me and Aiden lately. I'm not sure he'd want me around."
Todd frowned, sensing the underlying tension. "You know he cares about you, right? Maybe you just need to sit down and talk things out."
Lisa sighed, running a hand through her hair. "I know, but it's not that simple. Aiden's not exactly the most open person when it comes to his feelings."
Todd nodded in understanding, reflecting on his own experiences with his older brother. "I get it. But maybe you just need to find a way to break through his defenses."
As they approached the entrance to the mess hall, Todd placed a reassuring hand on Lisa's shoulder. "Anytime, Lisa. We're family, after all."
Lisa smiled gratefully, her thoughts drifting back to their childhood memories. "Speaking of family, remember when we used to bond over anime when we were kids? Are you still into that stuff?"
Todd's face lit up with a fond smile at the mention of their shared hobby. "Of course! Anime has always been a big part of my life."
With a playful grin, Lisa nudged Todd, encouraging him to share the story. "Oh? Do tell."
Todd chuckled softly, reminiscing about the rainy day when their friendship blossomed. "It was back when we were around eight years old. You missed your bus back home and started crying near the bus stop. I offered to walk you home because I prefer to walk anyway."
Lisa's eyes widened with surprise and nostalgia as Todd continued the story. "You were hesitant at first, but I stuck by you, popped open my umbrella since it began to rain, and covered you instead of myself. By the time we got to your house, you had calmed down, and I gave you the manga I was reading as a gift."
A warm smile spread across Lisa's face as she recalled the memory, her heart swelling with gratitude. She mumbled softly under her breath, "I still have that manga in my drawer to this day."
But before Todd could respond, a loud shout of terror echoed from the soccer field, breaking the peaceful atmosphere. Both Todd and Lisa exchanged a concerned glance before rushing towards the commotion.
As Todd and Lisa rushed to the soccer field, their concern growing with each step, they found the star player lying motionless on the grass. Todd knelt beside him, checking for vital signs, while Lisa's eyes scanned the scene. Suddenly, her gaze fell upon the player's neck, where faint but unmistakable healed bite marks marred his skin.
A shiver of dread ran down Lisa's spine as she looked up at Todd, her eyes wide with realization. She opened her mouth to speak, but before she could utter a word, their telepathic connection crackled to life with Aiden's commanding voice.
"Todd, Lisa," Aiden's voice echoed in their minds, stern and urgent. "Head to the guild now. We have a situation."
