TROUBLE-IN-PARADISE

1293 Words
Ethan rushed into the sacred grounds of the Pack - a place revered for its historical significance, which was always used to convene important meetings. His pace was both confident and brisk, each step reflecting his urgency while maintaining an air of determination. His current disposition stood in stark contrast to his playful demeanor just moments ago with Adrienne. The ancient site, steeped in tradition, seemed to amplify the gravity of the situation, making his brisk movements all the more significant. As he walked in, he was immediately greeted with a sea of worried and perplexed faces, their expressions a clear indication that something was amiss. The atmosphere was thick with tension, and the anxiety in the room was almost palpable, making it evident that his arrival had been eagerly anticipated, though not necessarily in a positive light. “We, the Grimstone Pack, have never encountered an obstacle we could not surmount, but we did so by banding together in unity,” Ethan admonished, his voice reverberating around the confines of the sacred ground, “Today should be no different.” He then took his seat at the center of the gathering, signifying the end of his welcoming remarks. Following his lead, everyone else took their seats, from the eldest of the elders to the youngest, all in the same orderly manner. Arnold Bernard, the Beta - second in command of the pack, stepped forward, bowed before the Alpha, and turned around to face the elders. “The Pack is in grave danger” he said authoritatively, his voice commanding respect from everyone present. “Yesterday, we received a report from our medical unit, that six members of the pack had fallen sick, and were diagnosed with the same illness'' He reported gravely. “I instructed them to observe the situation closely and keep me updated, and this morning they reported that twelve more members had contracted the illness. By noon, the number had increased to an astronomical figure of twenty people. And by this evening…” he paused, trying to emphasize the severity of the situation. “Thirty-five people are in the sickbay. To make matters worse, there is no cure. That was why the grade three alarm was sounded.” A wave of shock spread through the gathering, prompting everyone to begin whispering among themselves. “Could this be a conspiracy aimed at bringing us down?” “Could this be a form of biological warfare from an enemy pack?” “This situation is concerning; how can we ensure our protection?” “If there is no cure, what would then protect us?” “Enough!” Ethan roared, his commanding presence silenced the room, as his Alpha dominance radiated through every corner, compelling everyone to hush and heed his authority. What did I say earlier? Where is our unity and courage as wolves? He queried, disappointment evident in his voice. He scanned through the gathering, with a searching gaze. ‘'Where is the Chief Medic?’’ he asked, his voice filled with anger. How could he dare to be absent at such a crucial meeting? “He should be here any moment” Arnold replied respectfully, “He said he was on to something important regarding this outbreak.” “What do you make of this?” Ethan asked Arnold, drawing him closer to his side. “Well, it is still a mystery for now, but I am sure of one thing - it is not from an external source,” Arnold asserted confidently. “What makes you say so?” Ethan asked, intrigued by his confidence. “Our border defenses are flawless - there has not been a single breach. We are completely impenetrable right now, so it is inconceivable that anyone could breach us from outside,” Arnold replied, his confidence unwavering. “Hmm” Ethan sighed, his thoughts drifting far away with worry. He had always been a fearless leader, never backing down from any challenge or crisis thrown his way. Yet, this time was different - an unprecedented crisis unfolding before him, unlike anything he had faced before. With no past occurrences to draw insights from and prepare himself, he found himself grappling with uncertainty and discomfort, kept in the dark about the unfolding situation. Ethan looked to his side towards Sir Calvin - his Army General, “Reinforce all security units thoroughly. Double check all loopholes and enhance all security measures accordingly, we can’t be too careful,” he instructed. “Yes sir” Calvin intoned in obeisance. He had been supervising all activities in the Pack, with strict compliance with the Alpha’s directives, and never for once had there been any mishap. “Why should his means be put into question now?” he inwardly grumbled, his thoughts reflecting frustration at the sudden scrutiny. Turning back to Arnold, Ethan questioned, “And what is this I am hearing about there being no cure? is it not too early to come to such a conclusion?” “We have the best medical team in the entire Southern Conclave, and our medics reached this conclusion because no such illness has ever been documented before, despite having treated a wide array of sicknesses,” Arnold replied. “If it has already been concluded that there is no cure, then why is the Chief Physician and his team not here to report this to us officially at this meeting? Ethan questioned, perplexed at the unreasonable nature of the whole matter. “About that,” Arnold replied, “He mentioned checking out a centuries-old archive, filled with medical-related issues of an abstract and unusual nature. He said it could be something.” “And you gave him the approval to come after the Alpha’s arrival?” Ethan asked, anger evident in his voice. “In the absence of any viable information, it appeared to be our only hope. Moreover, it was supposed to be just a casual glance which should not have taken much time, so he should have been done before your arrival,” Arnold responded cautiously, mindful of Ethan’s mounting anger, attempting to avoid exacerbating the situation with his choice of words. “His delay likely suggests he is onto something promising” “We have waited long enough. Go and fetch the Chief Medic down here,” Ethan commanded, “And for his own sake, he better have a very good reason why…” His voice was drowned out by the rising commotion emanating from outside the sacred grounds, a result of hurried footsteps approaching the grounds. The once serene atmosphere within the campgrounds was swiftly disrupted as the sounds of urgency grew louder, signaling the onset of unexpected activity nearby. “Finally he is here.” “He had better have something good for us.” “Are you sure? He looks so agitated - it could be more bad news.” “Damn! We are done for.” Whispered murmurs filled the air as unsettling predictions began to spread among them, fostering an atmosphere tinged with uncertainty and concern. “Clear the way!” Calvin bellowed, as he pushed the people aside to make room for the chief medical officer of the Pack to enter the center of the gathering. Hurrying through the Path created for him by Calvin, Daniel Bradson - the Pack’s Chief Physician, strode in with rapid strides, clutching a sheet of paper tightly in his raised right hand. His breath came in rapid, shallow bursts, and his eyes sparkled with anticipation, revealing his heightened state of excitement and eagerness. “I have found it! I have found it!” he shouted, the urgency in his voice underscored the importance of his discovery, setting the surroundings abuzz with curiosity and expectation.
