A break away

Ryker I’d packed the car last night so I could get ahead with the traffic, traffic was murder at this time of day, I’d spend the day getting acquainted with Daniel’s daughter which by all accounts wasn’t fun, well that’s what Daniel said, well if I’m been honest he might have referred to her as the demons spawn once or twice, she must have really gone off the rails lately but who was I to judge, I was much worse at her age, when your nineteen all you want to do is have fun and be rebellious, maybe I wasn’t the best role model but I couldn’t back out now, he was leaving tomorrow and he’d never forgive me if I let him down at the last minute. No I was creating excuses. I was doing this. It might not be so bad and plus who wouldn’t want to wind down at a beach house for a year. Yes this would be easy I thought as I got in my car ready for my long drive to the beach house. Once seated in the sleek black car the familiar tune from my phone started playing, i inwardly groaned, oh great the happy couple I thought as I rolled my eyes and pressed the answer button. “ Charlie?” “Hey are you busy?” “Just on my way out, what’s up?” “Oh you’re going somewhere?” “Yeah, long story, just doing a favour for a friend.” “When will you be back?” “Six months—maybe a year.” “What? Spill.” Great I thought, I didn’t want this conversation, not now at least. “I can give you the short version, you remember Daniel?” “Of course, how is he?” “Great, he’s actually going to Tokyo, he needed someone to house sit and babysit it appears.” “Daniel has a baby? Since when.” “Since nineteen years ago.” “You’re babysitting Davina, good luck.” “Why do people keep saying that—never mind I don’t want to know, I’m sure I can handle it, now out with it.” “Out with it?” “Yes, what did you call for?” “Oh that, well I wanted to do this face to face.” “Is everything okay?” “Everything’s great.” “You’re worrying me now, what’s up?” “It’s good news don’t worry.” “Oh great I could do with some good news.” “Kala and I are going to have a baby.” The world instantly swallowed me up, I knew this day would come, I just didn’t know it would come so soon, the moment he uttered those words it was like he stabbed a dagger straight through my chest, I was happy for them wasn’t I? So why did I feel like this, it felt like I was falling, sinking into my own personal black hole, so this is what it feels like. “Hello—.” “Ryker—.” “Ry are you still there?” “Yeah sorry, bad line I guess, that’s great news congratulations.” “You will be back when Kala goes into labour won’t you?” “Wouldn’t miss it for the world.” “Oh great—“ “Listen I hate to cut this short but I have a long journey and want to miss the rush hour.” “No understandable man, listen keep in touch.” “Will do and congratulations again.” “Thanks Ry I knew you’d be happy, safe journey.” “Bye Charlie.” “Bye Ry.” I hit the end call button and slunk back into my seat just staring out the window, that was good news? Well it was I guess, so why wasn’t I happy? Why did it feel like my whole world had just collapsed around me? It’s not that I thought I could win her back, well I didn’t know if I wanted to, I mean I’d just watched them get married, it was clear that it was over between us but maybe on some level I just wasn’t ready to let go of her just yet even though I knew she was no longer mine. Well if I’m been honest, she never was. Then I was expected to come back once more to celebrate the birth of their new baby. Could I do it? Well that’s what I’d just agreed to. What a mess. My head felt like mush. It was bad enough watching him marry her and now I’d have to watch them as they made a family. Yes maybe time away would do me good. Maybe I’d get over her. I didn’t see it but stranger things have happened like me f*****g up the only good thing in my life that made sense and ending up alone watching my best friend give her everything that I should have gave her. God where was this coming from? Is this how I really felt. f**k. I needed a drink I thought as I started the car on my journey to Daniel’s to meet the spawn of hell. Hey maybe she’d cause that much trouble I wouldn’t have time to think I chuckled to myself. Yes this was going to be fine. I was going to be fine I convinced myself. The drive over to Daniel’s took four hours and by the time I arrived I was mentally, physically and emotionally exhausted, I knew I was getting closer when the salty sea air hit my senses. I definitely wasn’t in the city anymore. Driving up the driveway to his large Victorian house that sat right on the beach, I smiled, maybe I should relocate somewhere like this, it sure looked peaceful, calm and serene I thought as I walked up the steps and stood outside the white door, instantly the door was flung open. “You are unbelievable.” “Davina get here right now!” “I am not a child!” “Then stop acting like one” “Go to your room now!” “You can’t banish me to my room!” “I just did.” “You are ridiculous!” Not so quiet after all, so this was Davina, feisty one wasn’t she, If I’d thought I’d get peace here I was quickly seeing that peace was the last thing I’d get, she was huffing and puffing clearly annoyed at her dad, then she raised her heart shaped face and those crystalline blue eyes finally looked up at me acknowledging my existence, she peered at me curiously. “Who are you?” I smiled. “You don’t remember me do you.” “Ryker?” “Hello darling, can I come in it was a long drive.” I watched as her once angry face changed and a bright smile appeared on her pretty heart shaped face, instantly she blushed leaving a pretty pink stain on her cheeks.
