**MARA'S POV**
Petra gave me twenty minutes to wash my face and change my shirt.
After that, we left the room and headed down the corridor. Petra walked beside me and talked as we went.
"When you said, present yourself. What did you mean? Is it like a job interview? Is she an admin or something?"
"No, she's a student like us. Due to some reasons she's been here for five years already and still hasn't graduated. So she basically made herself Queen. When she asks you something, just keep your answers short. Don't give her anything to work with."
"How bad is she?"
Petra bit her index finger for a second. "On a scale of 1-10, I'd say she's a 100. Total mean girl. You definitely don't wanna get on her bad side."
"What the…” I scoffed. “I guess there are assholes everywhere."
"Trust me lovie, this might be the worst you've ever met." she muttered, playing with her nails. "But as long as you don't give her a reason to target you, you'll be fine. Just be polite, be boring, and let her think you're not worth her time."
"I can do boring."
"Good." She glanced at me. "Also don't stare at anything too long. Things are going to be quite awkward in your first few months."
I almost asked what that meant. Then a girl walked past us in the corridor and I caught a glimpse of her, she instantly hissed, her eyes flashing red at me.
Did I see that right?
I must be imagining things.
I looked straight ahead and kept walking.
"Good, exactly like that." Petra said with a smirk on her face.
The female dormitory corridors felt different from the rest of the academy. Same stone walls but someone had put things on them. Pictures, small decorations, little details that made it feel personal.
I guess they were to make it girlie but it just made it a whole lot creepier.
Petra was still talking when I suddenly stopped walking.
There was an open door halfway down the corridor.
Through it I could see a girl pressed against the wall and a man standing close, hands buried in her hair. The moans coming out of that room left absolutely nothing to the imagination.
I knew that jacket.
I knew those hands.
"Ethan?" I called quietly, not quite believing my eyes.
What was he doing here? And more importantly, what the f**k was he doing?
Petra finally noticed I'd stopped and quickly came back. She looked through the door, then she looked at me carefully. "Mara?"
"Who is she?" I asked.
Petra was quiet for a beat too long.
"Who is she, Petra?"
"That's Serena," she said quietly.
My heart went cold.
Ethan was my boyfriend.
Eight months. Eight months of calls he didn't return and visits he cancelled with reasons that always made absolutely no sense, yet I chose to ignore it. Eight months of telling myself we were just going through a phase and that he was busy, nothing personal.
The week my mother died he had gone completely silent.
I had made excuses for that too. Clearly, I'd just been deceiving myself.
I pushed the door open.
Ethan pulled back, turned around, looked at me then turned back to the Serena girl who was still dragging her panties up.
The thing that finished me off completely was that he did not look shocked. He looked at me with a calm, composed expression like he didn't care if I saw or not.
Serena straightened up slowly beside him. She smoothed her hair with one hand and looked me over from head to foot. She didn't look embarrassed even though she was only in her panties.
Though I hate to admit, she looked sexy as f**k especially compared to me that preferred just trousers and liked covering up.
She then turned to Ethan as if to ask something but I quickly beat her to it.
"What's this, Ethan?"
He shot at me without hesitation. "Exactly what it looks like."
I stared at him. Eight months in a relationship and when I catch him clearly cheating that's all he says to me. Five words.
"How long?" I asked.
He scoffed. "Basically the entire time. It's fucking..."
"Why? What were the last eight months? What was any of it?"
"I was just doing an assignment, you know, like coursework."
I laughed sarcastically. "An assignment?"
"Yes. The assignment was to make sure Mara Sutton came to Cresthaven Academy."
I shook my head slowly. "That doesn't make sense. Why would anyone.."
"Did you think the scholarship just found you by accident at the right moment when you were at your lowest. Did you think it was some godsent opportunity, and it just happened to arrive? Damn, you're stupid. It was arranged and I was the one who made sure you accepted it.”
I held my palms against my head, pressing it as hard as I could.
Then Ethan moved close to me and placed a hand on my shoulder. “You can calm your worries though, it managed to give me some extra point marks, so the eight months weren't entirely useless. Now I'll be sure to graduate."
I looked at him. Then I looked at Serena. She was watching the whole thing with her arms folded and her expression perfectly neutral. Even Petra just turned her head, guilt written all over her face.
My tears were flowing relentlessly now. "Who? Who arranged it? Who goes through all of this just to bring one girl to a school? Why am I here?
"The principal."
"Why would the principal..." I paused, then looked at Ethan seriously. "Why does she want me here?"
He looked at me for a long moment. "Do you really want to know?"
The way he said it made the back of my neck prickle. Every part of me was telling me to say no. To walk out, go back to my room and lock the door, dealing with one thing at a time.
Instead, I looked at him and I said, "Yes."
He stepped back, then crouched on the floor. It happened in a second, the next thing I knew, it sounded like something tearing apart, cracking, flesh twisting. I couldn't bear to watch it and shut my eyes. When I opened them, a massive black wolf was standing where Ethan had been, filling the entire doorway, so close I could feel the heat coming off its body.
My mind went blank instantly.
"The f**k was this? W-was that supposed to be Ethan?"
"Yes it's me. I'm a f*****g werewolf and just like me, every other person in this school is supernatural."
No. No. There was no way supernatural beings were really there, there was just no way.
Ethan was about speaking again but I instantly turned and ran.
"Mara!" Petra's voice called from behind me but I ignored it.
I shoved through the doorway and back into the corridor. I pushed past students who turned to stare and my heart was literally in my throat but my legs just kept going.
I had to get out here instantly. I couldn't survive another second.
