Chapter 6

734 Words
All week I had the jitters. I was so nervous that Pi finally kicked me out and told me to walk it off. I could not believe it, I will soon be leaving my home, my country. I have never been outside the city. Could I really pull this off? Will I get caught? What will happen to me if I do make it? Where will I live, what will I do for work? I can’t go back to what I was doing. All these thoughts kept circling around and around in my head, making me dizzy. I just needed to go back and take a good nap. On my last night there, I was so scared that I kept shaking and breaking things. Pi slapped me so hard that I almost blacked out. “Stupid girl, what is the matter? Why are breaking things, you are going to have to work double now to pay for these. You better not embarrass me when Mr. Smith, come or so help me, you will regret the day you ever set foot in this house.” She grabbed me by my hair and dragged me up the stars. “I’ll show you what happens to disobedient girls.” She then takes me to a room that I have never noticed before; she pulls out a key from around her neck and opens the door. At first, all I could see was darkness. She turned on a lamp and shined a light in the room. What stared back at me was so horrendous I did not think it was real. It was a girl who could have been around my age, half her face was melted with her left eye drooping. Almost all her hair was singed off. Where her mouth should have been was a gaping hole with missing teeth. I tried not to scream when the girl came near me. Get back, you’ll be fed soon.” Pi turns to me, “see this is what happens to girls who think they can get away with leaving. What” she says to my stunned face, “you don’t think I’m smart, do you, you don’t think I don’t know what you are planning or wanting to do. Take a good look if you try to leave. This is what happens. “ With that, she slams the door shut and locks it. I could only hear the muffled scream on the other side of the door. With an evil smile, she wishes me a good time and a reminder of the money I owe her. As I went back to my room to get ready, I thought to myself that I had to tell Mr. Smith that I can’t leave, or she will kill me. After he picks me up, I am scared. “What’s the matter?” He asked me. So I told him everything. Then I tell him I am sorry, but I can’t leave/ “Nonsense, we are leaving right now and before she knows it you will already be on the boat. Why, here is my man right now.” He walks up to a man that I did not see. He was standing in the shadows wearing all black from head to toe. When he looks at me, he hands me some men’s clothing and tells me to change. I quickly went behind the building and changed clothing. “Come quickly.’ Startled, I jumped but followed him and Mr. Smith. When we got to the pier, there was a boat that was bigger than the house I was living in. I saw other people walking onto the boat. I turned to Mr. Smith and asked him “are all these people going too.’ “Yes, now hurry, you don’t have much time.” “Are you going with me?” I asked. He shakes his head and tells me no but that he will see me soon. With that, he walked away. The man in all black grabs me by my hand and walks me up the pier, when I turn around to see where Mr. Smith went, I saw him with Pi. He is handing her some money, looks at me and has a nasty grin on his face, then walks away. “Your mine now” says the man in black as he shoves me in a dark hole.
