“What are you doing here?” Clara demanded, her perfectly manicured finger stabbing the air in my direction before dropping straight to Noel, who had begun to cry against my chest. “And what is that? You brought a baby here?”
I stared down at my baby for a moment, and my breath caught for a second. After more than a year of silence, of healing, and of trying to rebuild what she helped me shatter, I never imagined that the next time I would see her would be inside a conference room on the other side of the world, surrounded by strangers, light, and the heavy expectation of professionalism.
It felt wrong and surreal, almost cruel, to be here with her, but I forced myself to keep my gaze steady as I shifted Noel in his carrier, trying to calm him.
It just made things worse as he cried harder.
“I…” I began trying to say something, but the sound of Noel’s wail rose again, almost like he could feel Clara’s hostility.
“I knew this would be a problem when I saw her walk in with a child,” one man muttered from the far end of the table, rubbing his forehead as if my presence alone exhausted him. “We cannot have a baby crying during every meeting, especially a newborn. This is going to mess up our plan and disrupt the schedule.”
“It won’t work,” Another woman whispered under her breath, loud enough for the entire room to hear. “No matter how strong she is, there is no way she can handle photography assignments with a newborn?”
“It will mess up the whole schedule, and we won’t be able to get any work done.” Another man commented.
Noel’s cries grew louder, and the frustration and judgment in the room seemed to thicken around me.
My heart squeezed painfully as I rocked him, whispering to him and trying to soothe him even though my hands were trembling. “He’s not usually like this,” I said, my voice breaking slightly despite my attempt to stay calm. “It’s probably because of the flight or the cold air outside. He’s a calm baby and won’t mess up anything. I don’t know why he’s crying so much.”
Clara let out a short, cold laugh that made my skin crawl. “So the rumors were true,” she said, tilting her head with calculated cruelty. “You really were pregnant. I thought people were exaggerating, but it was clear they were not. You truly got pregnant, Aurora.”
I didn’t look at her and didn’t give her the satisfaction; instead, I focused on my sons. And tightened my hold on him. His tiny fists were now pressed against my chest as he cried. The pressure in my throat made it hard to breathe. The room filled with low murmurs, side talks, complaints, and irritated sighs while Noel’s tiny body shook with each sob.
“Everyone, please let’s calm down,” Rina said quickly, stepping forward with a strained smile as she glanced between the restless crowd and me. “Let’s not jump to conclusions. Aurora is here because her portfolio was exceptional. She was hired for her skill, and we will make the situation workable.”
Noel wailed again, louder this time, and several people in the room groaned under their breath.
Rina sighed and turned to me with an apologetic expression. “Aurora, could you please find a way to calm the baby? Just for now? We need to get on with the briefing, and it seems the baby probably needs your attention. The noise is…” she paused and rubbed her forehead. “It’s a little too much for the team at the moment. “
I nodded, embarrassed and overwhelmed all at once. “Of course,” I said. “I am really sorry for the inconvenience. I’ll step out for a minute.” I told her, adjusted Noel in my arms, and secured the carrier straps before walking toward the door with my head down.
My focus was on getting Noel to stop crying because each sound he made felt like a spotlight on everything people already doubted about me. I just wanted a quiet space, a hallway, anything that didn’t have all those eyes on me.
But as I pushed open the door and stepped out in a rush, I collided with something solid. It was not a wall, not a piece of furniture, but a chest.
A broad, warm, steady chest that caused the breath to catch in my throat. The impact sent a jolt through me, and before I even lifted my head, I felt something inside me twist and shiver like an old phantom pulse I didn’t want to remember. I looked up.
My eyes widened in shock, and my whole body froze as intense blue eyes stared down into mine. It was the eyes I had only seen once but never forgot. It was the eyes that had haunted me through pregnancy, through sleepless nights, and through every moment I held Noel and wondered about the man who had helped me create him.
Leon.
