Chapter 22: The Aftermath

611 Words
The kingdom was silent, the only sound the quiet murmur of the people as they stared at the dragon's lifeless body. Ryker stood tall, his sword still clheld in his hand, his chest heaving with exhaustion. Emilia rushed to his side, her eyes filled with concern. "Ryker, are you okay?" she asked, her voice trembling. Ryker nodded, his eyes scanning the surroundings. "I'm fine," he said, his voice low. "But we need to make sure the kingdom is safe." The prince, Alexander, ran to Ryker's side, his eyes wide with wonder. "Ryker, you were amazing!" he exclaimed, his voice full of excitement. Ryker smiled, ruffling the prince's hair. "I just did what needed to be done," he said, his eyes filled with pride. The advisors rushed to Ryker's side, their faces filled with gratitude. "Your Highness, we owe you a debt of gratitude," one of them said, bowing low. "You have saved the kingdom once again." Ryker nodded, his eyes serious. "It's not over yet," he said, his voice low. "We need to find out what brought the dragon here, and make sure it doesn't happen again." The advisors nodded, their faces set with determination. "We will start the investigation immediately, Your Highness," one of them said. As the advisors began to disperse, Ryker turned to Emilia. "I need to talk to the prince," he said, his voice low. Emilia nodded, taking the prince's hand. "Let's go, Alexander," she said, leading him away. Ryker watched them go, his eyes filled with concern. He knew that the prince was not safe, not yet. He turned to the advisors, his eyes serious. "I want to see the dragon's body," he said, his voice firm. The advisors nodded, leading him to the dragon's body. Ryker examined it, his eyes scanning for any signs of magic or manipulation. And then, he saw it. A small symbol, etched into the dragon's scales. A symbol that made Ryker's blood run cold. It was the symbol of the ancient evil, the one that had been defeated years ago. Ryker's eyes narrowed, his mind racing with possibilities. What did this mean? Was the ancient evil back? And what did it have to do with the dragon? He knew that he had to find out, and fast. The kingdom was not safe, not yet. As he stood there, lost in thought, he heard a voice behind him. "Ryker, I need to talk to you." He turned, his eyes meeting those of the mysterious figure who had spoken. It was Arin, the one who had helped him defeat the ancient evil years ago. Arin's eyes were serious, his face set with determination. "Ryker, we have a problem," he said, his voice low. Ryker's eyes narrowed, his mind racing with possibilities. What was it now? "What is it?" he asked, his voice firm. Arin's eyes were filled with concern. "The ancient evil is back," he said, his voice barely above a whisper. "And it's coming for the prince." The silence was deafening, the only sound the quiet murmur of the people in the background. Ryker's eyes narrowed, his mind racing with possibilities. He knew that he had to protect the prince, no matter what. "Tell me more," he said, his voice firm. Arin's eyes were serious, his face set with determination. "I'll tell you everything," he said. "But we need to get to a safe place, now." Ryker nodded, his eyes scanning the surroundings. He knew that he couldn't trust anyone, not yet. He followed Arin, his heart pounding with anticipation. What was coming? And what did it mean for the kingdom? The adventure was far from over, and Ryker was ready.
