Chapter 5: The Glass Box Elena woke to the hum of industrial fans and the smell of ozone. The plush, silk-draped bed was gone. In its place was a cold, reinforced concrete floor and four walls of bulletproof glass. She was shivering, the thin remains of her silk robe offering no protection against the sterile, air-conditioned chill of the cell. "Julian?" she croaked, her voice dry. "I'm here." He was in the corner of the glass box, stripped to his trousers, his muscular back pressed against the corner as he watched the dark hallway beyond. He looked less like a billionaire and more like a caged wolf—lethal, restless, and starving. "Where are we?" Elena asked, crawling toward him. Her knees scraped against the grit of the floor. "Deep," Julian muttered, finally turning his head. His eyes were bloodshot, his jaw shadowed with stubble. "My father’s old 'Black Site.' It’s a bunker built into the bedrock of the Catskills. No one comes here unless they’re meant to disappear." Elena looked around at the transparent walls. Beyond them, a man stepped into the light. He was older, his hair a shock of white, his face a map of scars that mirrored the darkness in Julian’s soul. "Dad," Elena breathed, pressing her hands against the glass. "You look well, Elena," the man said, his voice amplified through a speaker in the ceiling. It was the same cold, clinical tone she remembered from her childhood. "A bit disheveled, but marriage to a Sterling was never going to be easy." "You tried to kill us!" she shouted. "You blew up the penthouse!" "I cleared the board," her father corrected. "Julian was getting sentimental. He was supposed to bring me the ledger months ago, but he got distracted by the 'pleasure' of your company. I had to remind him of the price of failure." Julian stood up slowly, stepping in front of Elena to shield her from her father’s gaze. "The ledger is safe, Arthur. You won't find it." "Oh, I think I will," Arthur smirked. "I’ve seen the way you look at her, Julian. You didn't just marry her to keep her quiet. You’re obsessed. And a man with an obsession is a man with a weakness." Arthur tapped a button on his console. Suddenly, a hiss filled the room. Elena felt a sharp, biting cold begin to pour from the vents. "The temperature in that room will drop one degree every five minutes," Arthur said. "Until it hits zero. You can have the heat turned back on the moment you give me the location of the ledger. Until then... I suggest you keep each other warm." The lights in the hallway flickered off, leaving them in a dim, blue-tinted darkness. Elena’s teeth began to chatter almost instantly. The concrete floor felt like a slab of ice. "Julian... he's going to freeze us to death." "Come here," Julian commanded. It wasn't a request. He sat back down in the corner, pulling her between his legs and wrapping his heavy, muscular arms around her. Elena pressed her back against his bare chest, the sudden heat of his skin making her gasp. He was like a furnace, a living, breathing anchor in the cold. "I hate this," she whispered, her eyes stinging. "I hate that I need you to stay alive." "I know," Julian murmured, his breath hot against her ear. He pulled the edges of her robe tighter around her, his hands lingering on her curves. "But your hate doesn't change the fact that your body is already trying to merge with mine. Feel that?" He pressed his hand over her heart. It was thudding wildly, a frantic drumbeat of terror and rising desire. Despite the cold, despite the glass walls, the forbidden chemistry was still there, buzzing under her skin like a live wire. Julian’s hands began to move, roaming over her shivering form with a desperate, heavy touch. It wasn't just for warmth; it was a reclamation. In the dark, in the cold, he was reminding her who she belonged to. "He's watching, Julian," she panted, her head falling back against his shoulder. "Let him watch," Julian growled, his lips finding the sensitive cord of her neck. "Let him see that he can take my empire, my money, and my freedom, but he can't take you. You are the only thing in this world that is truly mine." He turned her around in his arms, his mouth crashing onto hers with a feral, starving intensity. It was a kiss born of desperation, a middle finger to the man on the other side of the glass. Elena’s hands found the waistband of his trousers, pulling him closer, needing the friction to stop the shaking. The cold was biting, but the fire inside the glass box was reaching a breaking point. Julian lifted her, pinning her against the reinforced glass wall. The cold of the pane against her back and the searing heat of his body in front of her created a sensory explosion. Every movement was a defiance. Every moan was a declaration of war. In this sterile, concrete hell, they found a pleasure that was sharper and more dangerous than anything they had shared in the penthouse. "The locket," Julian whispered against her lips as they moved together in a frantic, rhythmic dance. "When he takes you out for 'questioning'... you have to tell him Sarah lost it in the river. Give me time to breach the digital lock on his system." "You... you have a plan?" Elena gasped, her vision blurring as she reached the peak of her release. "I always have a plan," Julian hissed, his grip on her hips tightening as he followed her into the light. "I’m a monster, remember? And monsters don't die in cages." Just as the warmth of their union began to fade back into the chill of the room, the glass wall opposite them began to slide upward. But it wasn't Arthur who stepped in. It was Sarah. She was dressed in black tactical gear, a silent, suppressed pistol in her hand. Her eyes were hard, devoid of the sisterly love Elena remembered. "The locket isn't in London, Julian," Sarah said, her voice a cold, dead thing. "I’ve had it the whole time. And I think it’s time Elena saw what’s actually on that drive." Sarah pointed the gun at Julian’s head. "Tell her the truth, Julian. Tell her about the night her mother 'died.'"
