I threw myself against the door, hurting my shoulder doing so, but my adrenaline had kicked in. I took a couple steps back before kicking it open. It was still stiff so it didn’t slam open, but I pushed it forcefully open until I was inside. I ran up the stairs taking two at a time towards my apartment and used the key to get in.
“Diesel?!” I called out frantically. I however heard nothing. The entire Apartment had been emptied.
“No, no,” I raced back down the stairs and out the door.
“DIESEL!”
I screamed out for him. I began to panic. My chest constricting. When I heard nothing, but the deafening silence I ran. I ran calling his name. I searched everywhere. High to low. He was gone. My sweet, furbaby was gone. I searched him all night everywhere he could have gone around the apartment building.
I felt my tears come as I sat on the bench for the bus. What if they threw him in a shelter?
My chest tightened more painfully from the thought. I needed to find him. He was my ride or die. My everything. He was all I had here.
I wanted to call out when it came to going back to work, but I couldn’t. I had to go whether I liked it or not.
I showed up on time, but my mind was elsewhere. I didn’t even put up a fight with the guy at the front, he just let me in. I walked in and went to clock in.
The morning went by roughly. There were people who had called out because there was a flu going around like wild fire.
They were pulling workers left and right to work different sets. Hal way through the day, they pulled me to go work on the set in studio 8.I didn’t question it and just did what I was told.
I walked over and ended up finding myself on the set and immediately got to work. My shoulder was so sore from trying to bust in the door last night. I was working a little slower than they liked.
“Someone get that dog off the set!” Someone yelled. I looked over and saw it was Kal. Even sad seeing his goofy face with his tongue lolled out made me giggle. I whistled, gaining his attention immediately. He came barreling towards me.
“Hey, Kal. Did you escape your dad’s trailer?”
He licked my hands, I patted my side and began walking out of the studio.
“Where do you think you’re going?” The director yelled.
“To bring Mr. Cavill’s dog back to his trailer.”
Without another word Kal continued to follow me towards the trailers.
“What the hell do you mean you took care of it?!” I heard Henrys voice from where we already were. We were a good twenty feet from the trailers still.
“You told me the state of the building, so I made a few calls, she’ll thank you later.”
“I told you because I couldn’t understand how someone could live in a place like that, not to change her living!”
“Well she’s all you have been talking to me about. The building would’ve collapsed in a couple years anyway.”
I inhaled deeply as we drew closer. The building….live in a place like that….was this his doing? I felt hurt, anger, and well I was pissed.
“What about her dumbass! She’s gonna be homeless!”
“Oh, well…I didn’t think about that…”
“Where is she?”
“I arranged to have her work on your set today.”
“Great, how the hell am I going to tell her because I entrusted in you a secret you went and ruined her life.”
I saw him. Just like the very first day I saw him. Except now his face was contorted in anger and…regret?
Kal barked and took off towards him catching his attention. He looked at his dog immediately and I made a move to walk away, but caught his eyes. His eyes widened and the regret was right there.
“Harper…I, what are you doing over here?”
“Kal broke out so I returned him. The director threw a fit.”
I walked away from the trailers and returned to work. My mind was racing a million miles a second. If I had gone somewhere else for work I’d still have my apartment. I still would have my grooming appointments for extra cash. Most of all I’d still have Diesel.
If I hadn’t met Henry…
I threw myself into work. I felt gross because I was still wearing the clothes from yesterday. I probably looked anything but attractive. I needed a shower, fresh clothes. I felt like breaking down at work. When the director called for a break I went outside. I looked at my phone and began looking up the shelters and making calls. I was about to call the last one when I heard someone clear their throat behind me.
“Hey,” it was him.
“What do you want?”
“I know we left off on a bad note, and for that I really am sorry. I just. Are you okay you don’t look good.”
I let out a dry laugh and frowned before turning to face him, “Maybe it was because I met you.”
“Excuse me?”
I crossed my arms after putting my phone back into my pocket.
“I mean, the day I met you my car was defaced. I brought you to my apartment and the next day its condemned. Not only was it condemned but everything I owned is gone. Including Diesel-“
“Diesel’s gone?” he cut me off his voice held surprise and he sounded almost as distraught as I felt.
I nodded blinking furiously, I would not cry in front of him. I crossed my arms.
“Yeah, I’ve been calling shelters. I stayed up all night looking for him.”
“I’ll help.”
“You’ve done enough Henry.”
He looked at me and the same look of regret returned to his face.
“Yeah, I heard everything. It’s your fault I lost my home, my belongings and my cat. The first two I can get over, but if I can’t find him…”
My voice cracked and I spun away from him as I felt tears fall. I quickly wiped them away.
“I am sorry. I confided in my manager and he took things into his own hands. Know that I will do everything in my power to make it right.”
“I haven’t given up looking and I won’t. I can’t even think straight.”
I sniffled rubbing my face, “I haven’t eaten, and I definitely stink because I haven’t showered.”
I felt his hand take mine, “Come on.”
I shook my head, “Where? I can’t I have to work.”
“You forget who I am. The directors may direct the movie, but actors aren’t that much lower than them. We can call the shots on the set too.”
“I’ll get fired.”
“If you do, I’ll help you get another job.”
“I’m not looking for handouts.”
He looked at me as he led me towards the areas of the trailers. Almost like he was looking at me for the first time.
“I need you to understand that when we fought the other night I haven’t slept. I knew immediately by your face that I accused you falsely. I have grown cautious myself, it’s not easy for me to trust people…I assumed the worst of you, but I misjudged you. For that, again, I am sorry. You need to know it is difficult for a guy like me who is…well rich and famous to have snakes try to wiggle their way into my life. Leeches too.”
I thought about it and found myself nodding slowly not realizing we had come to his trailer until he opened the door for me. I looked at him with raised eyebrows.
“Go on.”
I slowly and hesitantly went into the trailer. Kal without hesitation raced up to me demanding to be pet. I fell to my knees and hugged him tightly. He licked my face whining.
“You can shower and sleep here, once I’m done on set we are going to find Diesel. I’m going to have my manager put out notices of his description-“
“I have a picture of him,” I whispered, but he heard me. He held out his hand for my phone which I gave him. I rubbed Kal, loving up his soft coat.
“He’s still needs a bath.”
Henry let out a soft laugh, “Yeah well…I haven’t had the chance.”
“Actors leave the sets before we do.”
He narrowed his eyes at me with a playful glare.
“I’ve been distracted.”
“By?”
“Someone.”
“How vague.”
He smirked in my direction as he shuffled towards the other side of the trailer. I was surprised how small he made this place feel. He was tall and muscular. It was difficult to see him spending a lot of time here.
“There are extra towels in the bathroom. I’ll leave clothes on the bed for you to change into. I have to go now, or the director will send a man hunt out looking for me.”
“I understand…thank you. I really appreciate it.”
“It’s my fault you are in this mess, I will do everything in my power to make it right. Starting now.”
I smiled softly at him, Kal licking my face because I stopped petting him momentarily.
“It’s funny, Kal loves people, but he’s never taken to them the way he does to you.”
I shrugged my shoulders, “Maybe a groomer thing.”
He smiled softly, “Maybe.”
With that he made his way to the door, he turned towards me with his mouth open to say something but changed his mind and left.
“Your daddy is a little odd, huh?”
Kal tilted his head making me giggle. I scratched behind his ears for a couple more minutes before getting off the ground. I sighed softly before going into the bathroom. It wasn’t tiny, but not spacious either. It had the necessities. A shower, toilet, etc. I peeled off my dirty smelly clothes. I winced not realizing just how bad I smelled. How did anyone not say anything to me? Why didn’t Henry?
I turned the water on and let it become hot before I climbed in. I nearly moaned once it hit my back. My aches lessened and my pain slowly faded. I reached for the shampoo and immediately got to work. Repeating the same process with the body wash before rinsing.
I smelt like him. I closed my eyes inhaling softly, it felt like a hug. A hug I needed.
I climbed out a few minutes later, my mind was slowly shutting down, I was emotionally and physically drained.
I walked into Henry’s bedroom, right next to the bathroom, just as promised he left some clothes out for me.
A pair of his sweats and a tshirt. I pulled them on before climbing under the covers. I was out the moment my head hit the pillow, before I was completely asleep though I felt a heavy weight settle on my thigh.
I reached and immediately knew it was Kal when he nudged his head with my hand. Then I was completely asleep.
