We have gone to two shelters, just for me to disappointed both times. Henry could see me become increasingly worried as I was beginning to feel like I would never find Diesel again. The reason I felt like this was because this was the last shelter in California that took cats in.
We arrived at the shelter forty five minutes later due to some traffic, but it’s to be expected in Hollywood.
“Wait here James,” Henry told the driver as we climbed out. I felt shaken to my core with what if’s.
“Hey, well find him I promise.”
I looked up at him with a tight smiled and swallowed down the dry lump in my throat. I hopped his words were true. We began towards the entrance his hand on my back helping me move forward. I felt my own hesitance.
We entered the shelter greeted by the sounds of loud barking in the back. There was a beat up wooden desk as soon as we walked in. An older woman sat behind the desk with her glasses perched on the edge of her nose. She looked tired.
“Excuse me,” Henry spoke up. The woman snapped her head up at full attention.
“Ah you must me the Cavill’s, I heard a certain cat might be in my care. I have a few black cats close to looking like your Diesel. I had a hard time with the paper work you see. I am the only one here. So things get muddled and messed up.”
“I understand, could we see the them please?”
“Yes of course right this way,” the woman stood up slowly as if she was hurting, “Getting old sucks, enjoy being young while you two can.”
We only nodded not really having anything to say in return as she led up through the back by where all the dogs were.
“These guys came in yesterday,” She pointed to the cages where there were dogs shaking and malnourished.
“They were starving in an abandoned house. The poor things.”
She shook her head as she lead us through. I couldn’t help, but to look at all the dogs, some looked hopeful and others were just scared.
I wrapped an arm around Henry’s waist feeling my heart break seeing all these dogs here.
“Right this way,” the woman said as she held the door open for us. In this room were cats Galore.
“The black cats are by each other.”
She pointed to the cages in the back. I felt my heart racing as I pulled away from henry and rushed over to them.
“Diesel?”
I only saw two up front. Then I saw him, in the bottom kennel he looked up at me meowing and rubbing against the kennel. I almost broke down at the sight. I swiftly opened the cage door and he hopped out and meowed at me. He rubbed against me with the hook in his tail.
“Hi baby,” I sniffled softly as I rubbed his head and gave his back a scratch. I looked at Henry smiling, only to find him smiling back with glossy eyes.
“I do love a good reunion. It’s rare these days.”
“I thank you for saving him and treating him well. I would love to volunteer here sometime. I am a certified groomer…I could give the dogs baths and haircuts for you in exchange for my gratitude.”
“Really?” She asked surprised and a smile spread on her lips, “I, that would help me out so much you have no idea.”
“In my own way of helping, I’ll be making sure to spread the word about this place. Hold a few adoption fairs for you to to raise money.”
The woman’s eyes watered, “You have no idea what that would mean for them.”
I grinned up at Henry who winked at me smiling.
“Do I need to sign papers?”
“No, no, don’t worry about that. I’ll handle everything. Really you two head on home. Bring your fur baby with you.”
I giggled and scooped Diesel up in my arms. I walked over to Henry who immediately gave Diesel attention.
“We have to go spoil you rotten little man.”
We went back the way we came, Henry’s arm around my waist this time. I looked at the dogs once again, hugging diesel close to my chest.
“What did you mean by spoiling him? I haven’t got-“
“I’m taking care of it.”
“Henry, no.”
“Henry, yes. I told you I was making things right. It has already begun. You can’t stop this.”
He gestured to himself making me smile even though I tried to glare at him.
“This unicorn has a lot of making up to do.”
I laughed this time not being able to help myself, “There’s that laugh.”
I lowered my head to hide the warmth that spread on my cheeks and held Diesel closer to me. Normally he’d sass me till the end of time for holding him so long, but it was comforting knowing he missed me just as much as I missed him.
We got into the car once more. Diesel looked over towards Henry making me look at him too, I couldn’t help but admire him. Even though he was the cause for mine and Diesels displacement…he was trying really hard to make it better.
“Henry?”
“Hm?”
“Thank you.”
He looked over to me and smiled softly, “You don’t need to thank me.”
“No, I do.”
“I can’t accept. I was the reason-“
“Yes, but you are also making it better. So thank you.”
He smiled a little more and reached out rubbing Diesels head.
“Where would we find the needs for him?”
“The local pet store?”
“Alright, lets go there, but I won’t hear anything on the price.”
I sheepishly smiled, “Sorry, it’s just in my nature.”
He laughed, “There is a lot I need to learn about you.”
I grinned and ducked my head. He wants to know about me? I felt like living in Hollywood was one thing, but everything that has happened to me the past week seems like a dream. I feel like when I sleep tonight I’ll wake up tomorrow in my apartment. I shook my head of my thoughts.
