Chapter 12: Reuniting at the Morgan Estate

1298 Words
After Evelyn's successful surgery and recovery, Emma and Alex are finally able to breathe, albeit cautiously. Their flower shop begins to regain stability, and the couple decides to focus on their future. One evening, Emma shares unexpected news with Alex: she's pregnant. This revelation brings immense joy but also a newfound sense of responsibility. Alex suggests they reconcile with his family, hoping to provide their child with a more secure upbringing. Emma hesitates, mistrusting Margaret, but ultimately agrees for Alex's sake. The couple moves into a wing of the Morgan estate, setting boundaries to protect their independence. Margaret feigns delight at their return, showering them with kindness and gifts for the baby. However, Emma remains wary, sensing the insincerity behind Margaret’s smiles. Alex begins working for the Morgan family business, helping secure contracts and revitalize certain failing sectors. Emma focuses on her flower shop's expansion and prepares for motherhood. Despite their efforts to maintain harmony, the stress of their environment starts to creep in. Margaret, fueled by jealousy and a desire to control Alex, devises a plan to drive a wedge between the couple. She exploits a work colleague of Alex’s, a charismatic and ambitious woman named Bianca, who has admired Alex for years. Margaret manipulates Bianca into believing she has a chance with Alex, sowing seeds of doubt and jealousy in Emma. Bianca begins spending more time with Alex, under the guise of work. She frequently visits the estate, casually mentioning long hours they’ve worked together or dinners with clients. Margaret subtly encourages Emma’s insecurities, planting doubts about Alex’s faithfulness. It's been a long day for Emma. The flower shop was thriving again, but balancing the business while preparing for motherhood left her exhausted. As she settled on the couch, her phone buzzed with a message. She glanced at Alex’s phone, which he had left on the kitchen counter, lighting up with a text from Bianca. Bianca: Dinner at Le Maison tonight? Just us. It’s been a while since we’ve had time to unwind without work talk. Emma’s stomach churned. Her heart raced as she debated whether to confront Alex immediately or wait. The message confirmed her suspicions that Bianca wanted more than a professional relationship with Alex. When Alex entered the room, Emma held the phone up. “What’s this, Alex? Dinner with Bianca, just the two of you?” He frowned, his confusion evident. “What? Let me see that.” He read the message and sighed. “Emma, it’s not what you think. She probably means to discuss work. I didn’t even agree with this.” “Then why does she feel comfortable asking you like this?” Emma’s voice trembled, a mix of hurt and anger. “You didn’t tell me anything about this. Don’t you think I deserve to know?” “I didn’t respond because I wasn’t planning on going,” Alex said, his tone defensive. “You’re reading too much into this.” Emma wasn’t convinced. “It’s not just this, Alex. It’s everything. The late nights, the calls, her showing up here unannounced. Don’t you see how it looks?” Alex ran a hand through his hair, exasperated. “Emma, you’re pregnant and stressed. I get it. But I’ve done nothing wrong.” She couldn’t hold back her frustration. “Then why do I feel like you’re hiding something? I can’t be the only one noticing how much time you spend with her.” “I’ve told you, it’s work,” Alex said firmly. “If you don’t trust me, what are we even doing here?” The words stung, and Emma felt tears welling up. “Maybe you should figure that out, Alex.” Despite Alex’s insistence that he wouldn’t go, Emma’s instincts told her otherwise. Later that evening, she checked his location on their shared app and saw that he was at Le Maison. Her heart sank. He had gone after all. Determined to get answers, Emma drove to the restaurant. Inside, she spotted Alex and Bianca seated in a private corner, their heads close as they talked. The sight was enough to ignite her fury. Emma marched over to their table, ignoring the curious stares of other diners. “Alex,” she said sharply, her voice cutting through the low hum of conversation. “Care to explain why you’re here after telling me you weren’t going?” Alex’s eyes widened in shock. “Emma, what are you doing here?” Bianca looked equally surprised but quickly masked it with a smug smile. “Emma, I don’t think this is the time or place for—” “Don’t you dare,” Emma snapped, cutting her off. “I’ve had enough of your games. What’s really going on between you two?” “Nothing is going on!” Alex protested, standing up. “This isn’t what it looks like.” Emma turned to Bianca. “And you? Do you think it’s appropriate to ask a married man to dinner, knowing his wife is at home pregnant?” Bianca’s composure wavered, but she quickly recovered. “I think you’re overreacting. Alex and I are colleagues. This was a professional dinner.” “Professional?” Emma scoffed. “Since when does professionalism involve secret texts and dinners alone?” “Emma, that’s enough,” Alex interjected, his tone pleading. “You’re making a scene.” “No, Alex, you made this scene the moment you put her feelings above mine,” Emma said, her voice shaking. “I trusted you, and this is how you repay me?” Bianca stood, her expression icy. “I don’t have to stand here and be accused of things I haven’t done. Alex, I’ll see you at work.” She turned and walked away, leaving the couple alone. Back in the car, the tension was palpable. Alex tried to explain, but Emma was too hurt to listen. “I can’t believe you, Alex,” she said, staring out the window. “Do you even care about how this makes me feel?” “Of course I do,” Alex said, gripping the steering wheel tightly. “But you’re not listening to me. There’s nothing going on with Bianca.” “Then why lie about going to dinner with her?” Emma shot back. “If it’s innocent, why not tell me the truth?” “I didn’t tell you because I knew how you’d react,” Alex admitted. “I didn’t want to upset you.” Emma’s voice cracked. “And you think lying to me is better? Do you know how humiliating it was to confront you in front of everyone?” Alex fell silent, guilt written all over his face. “I’m sorry, Emma. I should’ve handled this differently.” “That’s not enough, Alex,” she said, tears streaming down her face. “You need to decide what’s more important—this business with your family or the life we’re building together.” The confrontation at the restaurant sent ripples through the Morgan estate. Margaret, delighted by the tension, tried to console Alex, subtly planting doubts about Emma. “She’s always been insecure,” Margaret said one evening. “You can’t let her jealousy ruin what you’re building here.” But Alex began to see through his mother’s tactics. He overheard a conversation between Margaret and Bianca, where the truth about their scheme was revealed. Bianca had been encouraged by Margaret to get close to Alex, hoping to drive a wedge between him and Emma. Furious, Alex confronted his mother. “How could you do this? You’re supposed to be my family, not destroy it.” Margaret tried to deflect, but Alex wouldn’t hear it. “I’m done, Mother. Emma and I are leaving, and we’re never coming back.”
