Chapter 15 : The Proposal

1441 Words
The crisp autumn breeze swept through the Morgan estate as life continued to shift in unexpected ways. It had been months since Emma gave birth to Lily Grace Morgan, moved into their new house and the new parents were adjusting to the challenges of parenthood. While Emma adored her daughter, the sleepless nights and constant demands of a newborn were taking their toll. Margaret, true to her promise, had stepped into a more supportive role. She offered gentle guidance when needed but made sure to respect Emma and Alex’s boundaries. However, she couldn’t help but notice Emma’s growing exhaustion. One quiet evening, Margaret found Alex in the library, pouring over paperwork for the flower shop’s upcoming holiday season. “Alex,” Margaret began, her voice soft. He looked up from his desk, his brow furrowed. “Mother, is everything okay?” Margaret nodded but hesitated. “It’s not me I’m worried about. It’s Emma. She’s trying so hard to be everything—an incredible mother, a partner, and a business owner. But she’s burning herself out.” Alex leaned back, his expression somber. “I know. I’ve been trying to help, but she insists on doing everything herself. She wants to prove she can handle it.” Margaret gave him a knowing look. “That’s Emma. Strong, independent, and determined. But even the strongest people need a break. Have you thought about what might help her feel more supported?” Alex ran a hand through his hair. “I’ve been thinking about something… but I’m not sure it’s the right time.” Margaret tilted her head curiously. “What is it?” Alex hesitated before answering. “I want to marry her, Mother. Officially. We’ve been so caught up in everything—Lily’s birth, the family drama, the business—that we never had a proper wedding. I think making that commitment might give her some stability and reassurance.” Margaret smiled warmly. “Alex, that’s a wonderful idea. Emma deserves to know how much you value her. But if you’re serious, you’ll need to do this in a way that doesn’t add to her stress.” “I know,” Alex said. “I was thinking of something intimate. Just family and close friends. A celebration of us and Lily.” Margaret nodded approvingly. “Let me help with the planning. I’ll keep it simple and meaningful. I want to do this for you both.” Alex studied his mother for a moment, searching for any sign of ulterior motives. Instead, he saw sincerity. “Alright. But only if Emma agrees. I don’t want to pressure her into anything she’s not ready for.” Emma, navigating the role of a first-time mother, was pushing herself to her limits. Despite her love for Lily and her determination to be the best parent, the constant demands were taking a toll on her mind and body. Margaret, recognizing Emma's struggle, had kept her promise to be supportive and respectful, a far cry from the manipulative matriarch she had once been. But Alex saw what even Margaret couldn’t fully comprehend. Emma needed more than practical help—she needed reassurance, love, and a renewed sense of stability in their chaotic lives. One quiet evening, as Lily finally drifted off to sleep, Alex approached Emma in their bedroom. She was sitting in the rocking chair, her face illuminated by the soft glow of the moonlight streaming through the window. “Hey,” Alex said gently, leaning on the doorframe. Emma looked up, exhaustion evident in her eyes. “Hi. She’s finally asleep. I don’t know whether to cry from relief or just collapse.” Alex walked over and knelt beside her, taking her hand in his. “Emma, you’re doing an incredible job. I hope you know that.” She smiled faintly. “Thanks, Alex. But I feel like I’m barely keeping it together. I love Lily so much, but it’s hard. Harder than I thought it would be.” “I know,” Alex said softly. “And I want to do something to make things easier. To remind you that you’re not in this alone.” Emma tilted her head, a flicker of curiosity crossing her tired face. “What do you mean?” Alex kissed her hand, his eyes locking onto hers. “I want to take you somewhere tomorrow. Somewhere special. Just trust me, okay?” Emma nodded, too drained to argue but intrigued enough to agree. The next morning, Alex woke Emma early, handing her a steaming cup of tea. “I’ve already asked Margaret to watch Lily. Evelyn and Trisha will be there, too, so you don’t have to worry.” Emma blinked, surprised. “You planned all this?” He grinned. “I did. Now, get dressed. Something comfortable.” They drove out of the estate and into the countryside, leaving behind the stress and routines that had consumed their days. After nearly an hour, Alex turned down a narrow dirt road, and Emma gasped as the car came to a stop. Before them stretched an endless field of wildflowers, their vibrant colors swaying gently in the breeze. Rows of sunflowers framed the field’s edges, and in the center, a small gathering awaited: Margaret, Evelyn, Trisha, and a few close friends stood amidst the blooms, smiling warmly. “Alex…” Emma whispered, her voice trembling with emotion. “Come on,” he said, holding out his hand. Alex led Emma into the heart of the field, where a small arch made of intertwined flowers stood. Beneath it, a blanket was spread with a picnic setup. The scene was breathtaking, but Emma’s focus was on Alex, who suddenly dropped to one knee. “Emma,” he began, his voice steady but filled with emotion. “From the moment I met you, you changed my life in ways I never imagined. You’ve given me love, hope, and the most beautiful gift of all—our daughter, Lily. I know this past year hasn’t been easy, and I know I’ve made mistakes, but there’s one thing I’ve never doubted: I want to spend the rest of my life with you.” Tears streamed down Emma’s face as Alex pulled a small velvet box from his pocket, revealing a delicate diamond ring. “Will you marry me?” he asked, his voice filled with hope. Emma nodded, unable to speak at first. Then, with a choked laugh, she said, “Yes! Of course, yes!” Cheers erupted from their small audience as Alex slipped the ring onto her finger and pulled her into a passionate kiss. Trisha, Emma’s best friend, wiped away tears of her own as she captured the moment on her phone. “Finally! Took you long enough, Alex!” she teased, earning a laugh from the group. The cheers and applause faded into the background as Emma leaned against Alex’s chest, her hand resting lightly on his cheek. Their foreheads touched, their breaths mingling, and in that moment, the world felt like theirs alone. "You’ve made me the happiest man in the world," Alex whispered, his voice trembling with emotion. Emma smiled through her tears, her fingers brushing over the new ring that now graced her hand. “And you’ve made me believe in forever.” Alex kissed her again, slow and deliberate, as though he wanted to memorize the feel of her lips. Their embrace was interrupted by Trisha, who called out from the sidelines, “Alright, lovebirds! Time to let the rest of us have a moment with the bride-to-be before you steal her away forever!” Emma laughed, wiping her tears. “Trisha, you’re impossible!” “And yet you still love me,” Trisha shot back with a wink as she hurried over to embrace her best friend. “Congratulations, Em. You deserve all the happiness in the world.” The small group spent the next hour in the flower field, sharing laughter, stories, and heartfelt toasts. Margaret, ever the composed matriarch, pulled Emma aside at one point, her eyes unusually soft. “Emma,” she began, her tone measured but sincere. “Welcome to the family. Not just as Lily’s mother or Alex’s partner, but as someone we all respect and admire. You’ve brought so much light into our lives.” Touched, Emma replied, “Thank you, Margaret. That means more than you know.” As the sun dipped lower in the sky, painting the field in hues of gold and amber, the group began to pack up. Alex and Emma lingered, savoring the beauty of the moment and the joy of their newfound commitment.
