Secret Behind The Mark

695 Words
The cold wind swept through the deserted street as Elara stood frozen. Her heart pounded so hard she could barely breathe. The monster… Lucien… They had both vanished. Only the long claw marks gouged into the asphalt remained, proof that what she had witnessed was real. Police sirens wailed in the distance. Within minutes, officers flooded the street, questioning everyone nearby. One officer approached Elara. “Miss, are you alright?” She nodded weakly. “I… I think so.” “Did you see what happened?” Elara opened her mouth, but no words came. How could she explain that she had seen a creature made of darkness? That the city’s most famous billionaire had appeared out of nowhere and fought it? “No,” she lied. “Everything happened so fast.” The officer sighed and handed her a business card. “If you remember anything, call us.” She slipped the card into her pocket and walked away. But deep inside, she knew no one would believe the truth. Miles away, atop an abandoned warehouse, Lucien Draven stood beneath the moon. His breathing was steady, but his left arm bled from a deep wound. Dark smoke curled around the injury before it slowly closed. Cassian emerged from the shadows. “You let it escape.” Lucien stared at the city skyline. “I wanted answers.” “And did you get any?” Lucien shook his head. “It confirmed only one thing.” Cassian folded his arms. “Elara?” Lucien nodded. “They’ve found her.” Silence hung between them. After a moment, Cassian spoke again. “You’ve spent five hundred years hiding from the world. Why risk everything for one human?” Lucien’s silver eyes reflected the moonlight. “Because my curse reacted the moment I saw her.” Cassian’s face paled. “The prophecy…” “For the first time in centuries,” Lucien whispered, “I felt my heart beat.” The following morning, New Haven buzzed with gossip. News channels reported strange power outages and mysterious damage to the downtown district. Officials blamed a gas explosion. Lucien watched the report from his office. “They’re covering it up,” Ethan said. “They always do,” Lucien replied. Ethan hesitated. “Your schedule today includes a visit to the Historical Museum.” “Good.” Lucien picked up his coat. “It’s time we met properly.” At the museum, Elara tried to focus on organizing ancient manuscripts. But her thoughts kept returning to Lucien. Who was he? Why had the creature called him Veylorn? Before she could think further, Professor Bennett entered. “Miss Vane.” “Yes, Professor?” “We have an important visitor today.” “The museum’s new owner.” Elara frowned. “New owner?” “The museum was purchased yesterday by Draven Global.” Before she could ask another question, expensive black cars pulled into the museum courtyard. Security guards stepped out first. Then Lucien Draven. He entered calmly, dressed in a charcoal-black suit, his expression unreadable. The staff immediately greeted him. Lucien acknowledged them politely before his gaze settled on Elara. For a brief moment, time seemed to stop. He walked toward her. “Miss Vane,” he said with a slight smile. “I hope your first day wasn’t too overwhelming.” Elara looked into his silver eyes. They were exactly the same eyes she had seen the previous night. “You…” she whispered. Lucien tilted his head. “Have we met before?” She wanted to ask him everything. Who are you? What are you? Why did that monster call you Veylorn? Instead, she simply replied, “I don’t think I’ll ever forget your face.” A faint smile crossed Lucien’s lips. “Then perhaps fate has already introduced us.” At that exact moment, hidden deep beneath the museum, an ancient stone door trembled. A pair of glowing crimson eyes slowly opened in the darkness. A gravelly voice echoed through the underground chamber. “The Last Veylorn…” “…has finally found the girl.” The creature smiled. “And now… the hunt begins.”
