Trey had gone from being my brother to being my father as well. When I got sick he took care of me, when I fell he picked me up. Trey was my life, because he gave up his for me. We took our time to grieve the loss of our parents. After I was done being a baby about everything, I remembered how good my parents were to me, and how much they loved me, I began speaking to Trey again. I had completely neglected the fact that Trey had lost his parents too. The look of sadness on his face broke my heart, I was also angry with myself for being so selfish. Once we were done with our tears and settled into a good routine, life became more bearable.
Trey always tried to stay happy and upbeat, he was a very 'try to make the best out of a bad situation' type of person. Which was good because our whole life was a bad situation. Nine years ago we stowed away on a ship to get away from the Vereilles Kingdom that was swarming with people, Welkin's, Merrows, and humans all looking for me. Unfortunately when we arrived in Eden, a town in the Kingdom of Ivyaki, it was the same as Vereilles. Everywhere we looked there were posters of me, not in very good likeness, but still enough to make someone suspicious is they saw too much of my face. In Eden we perfected my disguise, I wore a black head wrap and eye batch, I also had a black hooded cloak, and wore my mothers scarf around my neck for extra security. When wrapped enough times around my neck the thickness of the scarf distorted my jaw line, and made my face look plump. Lucky for us the Ivyaki Kingdom is constantly covered in snow. We traveled all over, stowing away on ships, hiding n woods, moving from one kingdom to the next, going form town to town.
Now we were back in the Vereilles Kingdom for the anniversary of our parents death. We came from a fishing village at lands edge called Shadeau. Shadeau was located above the Merrow Kingdom of Oleas, and below the Welkin Kingdom of Nosaroc. The day we we returned we made camp in the woods just beyond the city. I woke to the sound of birds chirping in the trees, I rolled to my side to see that Trey was still fast asleep. My brother and I did the same thing every day, we hid. Most of the time we camped out in the woods, Trey was too scared to stay at an inn, we couldn't take the risk of me getting caught. I got up and stretched, I made sure every strand of hair was safely tucked away, and my eye patch was on straight. I wore men's baggy clothing, a white shirt, black pants, and black boots. I was not an ugly girl, when not made to look plane and filthy, I was quite the beauty. My eyes are big and round, I have full lips, and a button nose, i have tight spiral curls, and I am very petite. After I was done cleaning myself up I began packing up camp. By the time I was done packing Trey had woken up, he scratched his head and grumbled something I didn't understand.
"Good morning" he said, Trey is a handsome man, he has soft brown eyes, and sandy brown hair, he is tall and muscular with a strong jaw.
"Morning" I said handing him a flask filled with water, he drank and took a minute to wake up.
"Are you ready to get started?" he didn't even give me a chance to respond before he came flying at me. I dodged his advances, I dropped to the ground swinging my leg under his knocking him down. Trey made sure I knew how to defend myself, in case I ever get exposed, or we get separated and I am left on my own. Back on his feet Trey continued his attack, being a hunters son Trey was not the best in hand to hand combat, but give min a bow or a knife and he is a master. We spared every morning until the sun was full in the sky. Then we would hunt for our breakfast, I enjoyed this the most because it gave me a chance to practice my knife throwing. We didn't hunt big game often, we usually stuck to rabbits, fish, birds, today it looked like we were having rabbit. Trey skinned the rabbit while I built the fire, he put the rabbit on a stick and slowly turned it over the fire to cook it evenly. I always wondered why Trey stayed with me, I wasn't his real sister, he could have left a long time ago. Maybe it was because he didn't have anyone else, like me? Maybe he stayed because that's what our parents would have wanted. Whatever the reason I'm happy he never left, I don't know where I would be right now if it wasn't for him.
That day we headed into Shadeau, the city where we grew up. Shadeau was not a small town, it was quite big, probably because it got the most Welkin and Merrow traffic compared to the other cities in Vereilles. The streets were lined with shops, and stands, children played in the streets, it was a very lively place. Even more so now, they were preparing for the Union festival coming up in two days. The Union festival is a celebration of land being named neutral ground for Merrow's and Welkin's, and a promotion of peace between the two species, which will never happen, they can barely stand each other as it is. Humans are ridiculous to ever believe that a silly party will get the Merrow and the Welkin to live peacefully, the only reason they don't kill each other on land is for the very fact that the humans will not allow it, and the Merrow want the humans on their side, while the Welkin want the humans on their side for the inevitable war between the two.
"Kal..." Trey waved his hand in front of my face trying to get my attention.
"What?" I asked, Trey gave me an exasperated look,
"What do you want to get?" he gestured towards the vegetable cart we were currently standing in front of.
"Oh right," I said finally looking at what the cart owner had to offer, "how about six potatoes, five carrots, and some cabbage please" The vendor handed Trey the food, and Trey payed him,
"We're running low." Trey said fingering the pieces of silver in his hand."I'm going to have to sell some pelts to get us to the ext town." That's how we survived, we kept all the skins from the animals we killed, we cleaned and dried them, then sold them. Small animals didn't get us very much, so that's when we hunt larger animals, we get even more if I make something from the bones.
