“Are you home?” Mrs. Luther smiled, she quickly got up and led Isaac to sit in the narrow living room of the house. “Isaac, this is Selene. She's the daughter of a friend of mom's. Didn't you guys meet on a blind date today?”
“Uh, yes, I met her this afternoon.” Isaac forced a smile. He stared at Selene who still maintained an arrogant temperament in her every move.
“Good!” Mrs. Luther smiled widely, she rubbed her son's shoulders proudly. “Mother invited Miss Selene to join us for dinner. Your younger sister is staying at a friend's house, so she won't be home tonight.”
Isaac looked at his mother, he couldn't bear to make her sad. So he just nodded. “Yes, thank you for your effort's mom. I'm very touched.”
“No need to say such things,” Mrs. Luther replied with a small chuckle. “Let's go eat, Selene. Auntie has prepared a lot of special dishes for tonight.”
Selene frowned, she shook her head. “Do you think I want to eat food made by those dirty hands of yours?”
Mrs. Luther was silent, she looked very surprised at what Selene had just said. “What, what, what do you mean, Selene?”
Isaac frowned, he immediately rubbed his mother's shoulder, with a forced chuckle, the boy said, “I've already eaten with her mom. Selene must have just eaten with me. She must still be full.”
“What are you lying for?” Selene laughed mockingly. “Didn't I tell you before? I have no interest in dating you! You're just a pathetic, pretentious nurse. Why would I bother spending time with you?”
Isaac was completely at a loss for words. He shook his head several times as he sighed heavily. “Selene, I know you're angry. Just let me make up for it, okay? Don't let my mom worry.”
“Do you really want to be my lover that much? Was it love at first sight?” Selene smirked, she stared back and forth between Mrs. Luther and Isaac. “You're just poor, shabby people. Don't dream too high, it's so pathetic.”
Isaac clenched his hands involuntarily, but he still tried to get his mother out of the room. “Mom, come into the room, let me talk to Selene okay?”
Mrs. Luther stared blankly ahead, but she shook her head. “Let me hear everything, Isaac. Let me hear it. Do you always have this happen?”
“No mom, just this time.” Isaac smiled, he looked very determined, not intending to make his mother doubt at all. “Let me handle everything okay? Just rest, don't think about anything.”
“No, Isaac. Mom-”
“What a pathetic drama!” Selene interrupted first. She folded her arms across her chest, giving Isaac a sullen look. “I will accept you if you are willing to fulfill my conditions.”
“Conditions?” Isaac didn't even know when he had proposed to Selene.
The woman nodded proudly. “I'll only date someone who picks me up in a sports car and buys me various luxury items. You know, I've always collected bags and watches. I'll accept a man who can buy me things I like.”
Isaac frowned, but he finally shook his head. “I can't do that, Miss Selene.”
Hearing that, Selene chuckled sarcastically. “Of course! What does a poor man like you have? You don't even have any self-respect! Disgusting!”
“If you don't want to eat dinner here, I'll drop you off,” Isaac said, his tone seemingly inviolable.
Selene laughed once more, the look of mockery never once falling away. She moved closer, looking at Isaac. “I'll give you one chance. As long as you come pick me up in a sports car, I'll consider accepting you.”
“I can't do it,” Isaac replied, repeating. The man closed his eyes for a few moments. “I don't have enough money to buy such an expensive car.”
“Of course, what can a poor nurse like you buy? You're so lowly!” Selene patted Isaac's shoulder a few times. “What if I hire you? I'll pay you a few thousand dollars, and in return, you'll do whatever I want. Your face is a shame to waste.”
Hearing that, Isaac clenched his hands involuntarily. But he still shook his head patiently. “No need, I don't really need the money. Mom, let's go inside. It's getting late. It would be good if you rested early today.”
Mrs. Luther couldn't hold back her tears when she heard the son she was always proud of being insulted so badly. “Miss Selene, what did my son do wrong to make you say all those nasty things?”
Hearing that question, Selene laughed as if she had just heard the funniest sentence in the world. “Why are you still asking? He's just a loser! And you're ignorantly trying to match this beautiful me with your son, who's nothing?”
“What?” Mrs. Luther was stunned.
“I told you before, if you want me to accept it? Isaac has to pick me up in a sports car! That's the best generosity I can do! With his loser status, how could he try to date someone as beautiful as me?”
Hearing Selene bragging further and further, Isaac was truly disgusted. “Selene-”
“Old women like you are a burden. It's so sad that Isaac has an ugly mother like you! No one would be willing to marry him if they knew that Isaac had a mother like you!” Selene interrupted Isaac first. She screamed loudly and burst out laughing. Her laughter was especially loud among the quiet night in the room.
Isaac was really upset this time. He was about to turn around to pull Selene away when there was a knock on the door.
Isaac sighed heavily. “Go away Selene, I don't want to argue with you.”
“Loser, what are you-”
Isaac opened the door with a bang, cutting her off. “Selene, don't make any further mess,” he said before turning to the door. But in the end, the man was stunned for a few moments in surprise. “Anastasia?”
Anastasia smiled, she came with a young woman whose face was unfamiliar to Isaac. But what was striking was the number of expensive items the woman was carrying. “Oh, what's up? Who did you want to see?” Isaac asked awkwardly.
Anastasia smiled. “I wanted to see you, Isaac.”
