"I'm not hiding anything," Mia said, and even as the words left her mouth she knew how thin they sounded. "You're a bad liar," Lucas said. "You were a bad liar in the archive room and you're a worse one now." He glanced around the filing floor, empty this early, and lowered his voice anyway. "Something happened. With Kade. I can see it on you." Mia's mind raced through every version of an answer that wouldn't break her promise. She'd given Kade her word less than twelve hours ago, in a library thick with the smell of burned paper, and she wasn't willing to hand that trust away just because Lucas had good instincts and worse patience.
