CHAPTER 2

"It's simple." The chairman nodded again and gestured to her to grab the next document he had been referring to. "You will be assigned to him fulltime. You will be the closest person to him, in the sense that you will be with him every single day, taking note of his condition, keeping him company, making sure he doesn't hurt himself or others by doing things that will worsen his mental health and state of mind," he concluded, as he watched her read through the contents. Elena felt like a giant rock had landed on her chest, as she looked down at those words written across the page. She felt like she had just been sent out for execution without having the chance to plead for mercy from her jailers. Her mind was reeling. The professor wanted to assign her to a man who needed constant supervision, and she would have to visit him on a daily basis. She felt honored to have been chosen by the chairman himself, but she was not sure that she was ready for such a responsibility. "I'm honored, professor." She muttered, dropping the papers on the table. Dennis gave her a warm smile, one that hadn't been seen in ages. "Thank you," he said sincerely. "Now, I know you have a lot of questions concerning your new job, so let us discuss those." "But I don't think I am the best person for this job," Elena inserted, politely cutting off the professor before he could continue. "What?" Dennis's expression grew stern. "Why do you think so?" He asked her, clearly displeased with the news. Elena swallowed heavily, staring down at the table for a moment. She knew there was a reason why she was hesitant to accept this opportunity, yet she could not say what exactly it was. "There are a lot of reasons." She started, aimlessly looking for where to begin. "Firstly, I don't think I can help him. His case is too severe." She admitted, although she knew she wasn't convinced herself. "Sorry to ask sir, why did you assign me to this job? There are way more qualified doctors that could treat him." He shook his head with clear disappointment. "That's the only problem you have, Miss Davis, you do not recognize your capabilities and thereby underestimate yourself," he stated firmly. She tried to resist the urge to smile as her face warmed up. This was the closest to a compliment she had ever received from him. "You asked me why I chose you?" He continued, and she slowly nodded. "Because I believe in you, and trust your abilities, simple. It would be such a shame if someone else should get the job," He added, making his thoughts known to her. "But if that's how you feel, then the job will be given to..." "I will do it, sir." She interrupted him with an honest declaration. "I want to help the patient," she added. The room fell quiet for a moment. Dennis sat there staring at her, trying to observe if she was being sincere or not. After seeing the determination in her blue gaze, her decision was met with a nod of approval and a soft smile from the professor. "Very well then, you made the right decision." He said and reached out to shake her hand, a gesture that surprised her. "Thank you sir, I will do my absolute best." She replied immediately, returning his warm handshake. Dennis broke the contact almost immediately, and his brows rose as a thought crossed his mind. "By the way, I almost forgot to mention that this new appointment comes with double pay," he revealed, so casually as if the news he just gave didn't have the ability to change her life. He waited for her reaction, and Elena blankly stared at him for a few seconds before realizing what exactly he meant. Her eyes widened as she tried to process the information she just got. "Do..double pay?" She stammered, finally comprehending the professor's statement, her voice almost inaudible. "Yes, Miss Davis. You heard right." Dennis nodded, his glasses flickering with each brief movement. "Professor!" Elena exclaimed, moving from her seat and nearly falling off her chair. Her mouth was partly opened with excitement, and her heart was pounding fast. "That's an unbelievable large amount of money, it's twice my current salary." She squealed, unable to hold back her bewilderment. "Absolutely," Dennis agreed with a smile. "Sir." She grabbed the edge of her table, her tone becoming stern and filled with determination. "I am more than ready for this job. I am ready for this challenge." She sounded so zealous, as though she was giving a manifesto for an upcoming election. The professor was delighted by her unleashed passion as he sat back in his chair, watching as Elena settled down. "Then, I am glad to welcome you on board, Miss Davis. Let's start by discussing the contracts and other relevant information regarding the patient." "Certainly sir," she replied, nodding firmly as she picked up the document once again. As she jetted out of his office, she was filled with all kinds of emotions. She didn't really know how to act. She immediately picked up her phone and decided to give her best friend Ava a call. It rang for a few seconds, before a sleepy voice met with hers on the other side. "Babe.. This had better be very important. I was about to kiss my prince in my dreams," Ava rambled on sleepily, waiting eagerly for what her best friend had to say. "It is." Elena replied, smiling from ear to ear. "I had a meeting with my boss, and guess who just got a pay raise by a hundred percent? Mee....." She exclaimed, she could not help but hop round her office like a child who had just got a chocolate. "What?? How?? When??" Ava questioned her, as she couldn't wait to hear how exactly it happened. "I just concluded a meeting with my boss, where he just told me I'd have to serve a particular patient, like become his personal doctor." "A personal doctor? That sounds cool," Ava stated and continued immediately. "What is the patient like? Male or female? Young or old? Are you going to live with him or her? What would be your meeting schedule?" She rushed to ask all the questions that were on her mind. "Give me a chance to speak, then I'll be able to give you answers to all your questions," she replied, trying to tame her best friend's inquisitiveness. "Sorry sweetie, go ahead, I'm listening." She responded, trying to get her excitement for her friend under control. "The patient has yet to show himself, so I don't know much about him yet. I'll find out eventually, but Dennis said he is a special VIP patient." "Him?" Ava asked, sounding so intrigued by the mention of the word 'him'. "Yes, Him," Elena answered, not missing the slight change in her friend's tone. "Ohh babe, I'm so happy for you. I just hope it is safe for you. You know, going to his house and all," Ava added, sounding a bit unsure as to if she was 100% certain it was the best choice her friend had made by accepting the job. "Yes, it's safe, I'll be fine. Remember it came through the head of the hospital," Elena replied, assuring her friend she'd be just fine, and she had nothing to worry about. "Alright then, if you say so. Ohh my love, I'm so happy for you. We will meet up soon to celebrate this good news, bills on me babyyy." Ava responded, emphasizing the last bit. "Thanks babe, and I can't wait. Alright, I need to get back to work. We'll talk better much later," Elena hurriedly replied, remembering she had to go back to work before her attention was needed. "Bye babe. Take care." "Bye," Elena said before ending the call and placing the phone in her lab coat pocket.
