CHAPTER 3

1180 Words
Shawn Anderson. It was a name she had heard before, came across in books, and seen on screens. Elena had never had a reason to be curious about who he was. Well until now. It was by this time some weeks back that her boss had her sprinting to his office and presenting her an offer with a glittering bonus he knew she couldn't resist. Before she knew what was happening, she had signed a contract and got the necessities discussed and got herself ready within the space of ten days. She found out her new patient was a member of a famous family. Therefore, she seized all her free time to read up on the Anderson's history, achievements, and their present lifestyle. She wouldn't want to go there without knowing anything about them now, would she? Finally, it was the day Elena was to meet with her patient. She stood on the sidewalk just outside her street, where she was told to wait for the car assigned to bring her to Anderson's house. As she stood there, she was filled with mixed emotions of excitement and anxiety. It was the first time she met such affluent people in person. They weren't just affluent, they were more well to do than the president himself. And she would be blamed for having second thoughts? She looked down at her dress, and the pair of heels she wore. They made her feel she should have worn something different. The night before, she ransacked her wardrobe in search of a presentable outfit, and she settled for the white gown she was wearing today. She found the other black and blue dresses a bit plain for the first appointment. However, at that very moment she wasn't too sure if she made the right choice of dress or if she should just race back home and change up. Immediately she looked up, she sighted a dark vehicle parked just a few feet away from her. It was glittering like a crystal on the side of the road with the sun beaming directly at it. Its tinted window drew her attention to check her reflection in the glass. Hurriedly, Elena moved closer to the window and found her face through its darkness. The first fault she noticed was that her strawberry lipstick had smudged. Her tension died almost as soon as it arose when she recalled the emergency make-up kit she carried around. She opened her bag immediately and located the lipstick tube that she got out and reapplied to her lips. She smacked her lips together and sighed satisfactorily at her amplified appearance. Suddenly, she noticed her improvised mirror was beginning to descend little by little, taking away her reflection, and almost giving her a heart attack. Her gaze was immediately fixed on a young man who she did not expect to be in the car. He stared at her with a slight gleam of mockery, and she stood there not knowing what to do but screwing her eyes shut with her face reddened in embarrassment. She had been in a haste to check out her outfit and clean off the smudge on her lips, and she didn't consider that there could be people behind the dark shades. "Sorry," she whispered apologetically and immediately averted her gaze and began walking away from where she had been standing. She moved a few miles and decided to look back to be sure the men in the tinted car were not coming after her, probably to sue her. When she was sure that she was safe, she decided to continue her wait for the car that was to take her down to her newly assigned job. She didn't have to wait too long, as a black convertible pulled up right in front of her almost immediately. She quickly stepped back, not wanting the event that just happened to replay itself. The driver's door pushed open, and a middle-aged man stepped out of the car. He was dressed in a dark-blue shirt and black pants, he had a gentle smile on his lips and a friendly face that was decorated with wrinkles and laugh lines. He looked very lovely with his perfectly trimmed hair, which made him look younger than his actual age. The man moved towards her, his steps soft and easy. "Good morning. Elena Davis, is it?" he asked as he got close enough to her, trying to ascertain if she was the one. "Yes, I am Elena Davis," Elena replied, her voice sounding a little shaky. He immediately got out a business card from his pocket and handed it over to her. "My name is Joe Wilson. I will be your personal driver through and from Anderson's estate, every day," he stated and smiled warmly. She had been told of the private chauffeur who was arranged for her to make work easier and more convenient, but she still could not help but feel a bit surprised and honored. "Thank you, I'm really grateful," she replied. The man smiled a bit more at her show of politeness before heading back to the car. He assisted her in getting her side of the door opened and waited for her to get inside. "Thank you." She muttered before climbing up the seat and getting settled in, as she watched the driver turn around and get into the car. He closed the door, and the car took off with smooth acceleration. Elena adjusted her dress and her hair as she stood outside the imposing gates of the mansion. The wrought-iron entrance loomed large, adorned with intricate designs that spoke of wealth and privilege. As Joe led her through the house to where she would be received. The gravel path led her through manicured gardens, the scent of blooming flowers filling the air. The grandeur of the estate made Elena's heart race with a mix of anticipation and professional duty. She marveled at the opulence. Upon reaching the massive front door, it swung open silently, revealing a polished marble foyer. A butler in a crisp uniform greeted her with a nod, guiding her through labyrinthine corridors adorned with priceless art. The air seemed to hum with a quiet sense of privilege that whispered through each meticulously decorated room. They walked right past the main living room as Joe led her into a room used for meeting special guests. She couldn't help but be in awe of the way the room was designed. There was not much furniture other than a large sofa and a marble table at the center of the room. There were no televisions or other home appliances, the only source of entertainment in that room was by reading books from the antique wooden shelf. "Please, have your seat," Joe sounded, cutting short her moment of admiration. She nodded as she looked down and the leather of the furniture, fearing damaging it if she ever did sit on it. "I'll inform the madame of your arrival," he added, before leaving her to admire the place to her heart's content.
