chapter - 2 into the Lion's Den

: Into the Lion’s Den The ink felt heavy on the page as Sienna signed her name at the bottom of the last contract page. The moment the tip of the pen lifted, Lucian pulled the document away, skimmed it with a cold, satisfied glance, and slid it into a safe behind a painting on the wall. "Welcome to your new reality, Sienna," Lucian said, calling his head of security into the room. "Gabriel will take you to my estate in Upstate New York. Pack what you need. Your old life ends tonight." Two hours later, Sienna found herself staring out the tinted window of an armored Maybach as it drove through massive iron gates guarded by armed security. The Vance Estate was an imposing gothic mansion surrounded by dense forest—a gilded prison hidden away from the world. Gabriel, a towering man with a quiet demeanor, held the heavy mahogany front door open for her. "Mr. Vance will return late tonight, Miss Miller. Your quarters are on the second floor, east wing. You are free to roam the residential areas, but the basement and Mr. Vance's private study are strictly off-limits." Sienna walked up the grand staircase, her footsteps echoing in the vast foyer. The room prepared for her was immense, furnished with high-end silk sheets, a marble fireplace, and a balcony overlooking the dark gardens. It was grander than anywhere she had ever lived, yet it felt colder than a cell. Unable to sleep, Sienna paced the room until 3:00 AM. The adrenaline from the night was wearing off, leaving behind a sharp, aching exhaustion. Just as she decided to lie down, she heard the heavy thud of footsteps down the hallway, followed by the faint sound of a muffled groan. Driven by curiosity and a sudden spike of anxiety, Sienna cracked her bedroom door open. At the end of the dimly lit hallway, Lucian was leaning against the wall. His jacket was gone, his tie loosened, and his crisp white shirt was ruined by a deep crimson stain spreading across his left shoulder. Blood was dripping onto the dark hardwood floor. Sienna gasped, pulling the door open wider. Lucian’s head snapped toward her instantly. Even wounded, his eyes flashed with lethal instinct. "I thought I told you to stay in your room," he growled, his voice strained as he pressed a hand against the wound. "You're bleeding," Sienna said, stepping into the hallway despite her mind screaming at her to retreat. "It's a scratch. Go back to sleep." "That isn't a scratch, Lucian, you've been shot!" Sienna insisted, walking closer. She saw the dark stain pooling through his shirt. Without thinking, she grabbed a clean towel from her adjacent bathroom and stepped up to him, pressing it against the bleeding shoulder. Lucian let out a sharp hiss through his teeth, his hand slamming against the wall behind her, pinning her between his body and the corridor wall. He towered over her, his chest heaving, his dark eyes burning with an intense, unreadable emotion. "You shouldn't be touching me, little bird," Lucian whispered darkly, his face inches from hers. "You don't know what kind of blood is on my hands." "I know exactly who you are," Sienna replied, her voice trembling slightly, but her eyes holding his without flinching. "But if my owner bleeds to death on night one, my contract doesn't mean much, does it?" A slow, dangerous smirk tugged at the corner of Lucian’s lips despite the pain. "Defiant. I like that. But remember this, Sienna—caring for a monster only makes him want to keep you longer."
