chapter - 7 GILDED CAGES and SHADOWS

748 Words
The return trip to the Upstate New York estate was conducted under heavy rain and complete silence. Sienna sat frozen in the corner of the Maybach, her lips still burning from Lucian’s kiss. She stared out the window at the passing dark trees, her mind a chaotic storm of anger, confusion, and a terrifying, unwanted attraction. Beside her, Lucian was silent, his dark gaze fixed on his tablet as he replied to encrypted messages from his syndicate lieutenants. He acted as if nothing out of the ordinary had happened—as if he hadn't just kissed her senseless in front of the entire world. When the car finally stopped under the estate's stone portico, Sienna didn't wait for Gabriel to open her door. She pushed it open herself and marched into the mansion, her heels clicking angrily against the marble floors. "Sienna," Lucian’s voice called out from behind her, calm and commanding. She stopped at the foot of the grand staircase, turning around to face him. Her cheeks were flushed, her hazel eyes burning with rage. "You had no right!" she snapped, her voice echoing in the empty foyer. "The contract said we play the part for the public! It didn't say you could... you could touch me like that!" Lucian walked toward her slowly, taking off his leather gloves one finger at a time. He stopped at the first step of the staircase, standing just below her so they were almost eye-level. "The public needed to believe it, Sienna," he said, his tone devoid of remorse. "Marcus and Julian were watching from the front row. If I gave them a fake, polite peck on the cheek, Julian would have known instantly that you were just a pawn. By claiming you completely, I made sure they know that coming after you means total war with me." "You did it to show dominance!" Sienna yelled, tears of frustration pricking at the corners of her eyes. "You did it to show everyone in that room that you own me!" Lucian stepped up onto her stair, closing the distance between them. The cold, corporate CEO mask slipped away, revealing the dark, predatory mafia don underneath. "I do own your time for the next six months, Sienna," Lucian murmured, leaning closer until his chest almost brushed hers. "I paid three million dollars to keep your brother alive. I gave you safety, luxury, and my protection. But don't mistake my methods for cruelty. In my world, ownership is the only thing that keeps you breathing." "I am not a thing, Lucian!" she spat back, her hand pressing against his chest to keep him from stepping closer. She felt the hard, steady rise of his muscles under her palm. "I am a human being. I have a life, a career, art I want to create! You’ve locked me in a golden cage and expected me to sing for you!" Lucian stared down at her hand on his chest. Slowly, his gaze rose back to her eyes. "You want to paint?" he asked softly. Sienna blinked, caught off guard by the sudden shift in his question. "What?" "Gabriel," Lucian called out without turning around. The head of security appeared instantly in the foyer doorway. "Yes, Boss?" "Have the third-floor conservatory cleaned out by tomorrow morning. Contact the best art suppliers in Manhattan. Set up canvases, oil paints, brushes, and lighting. Miss Miller will have a fully functioning studio by tomorrow afternoon." Sienna stared at him in utter shock. "Lucian... you don't have to—" "I don't do things out of kindness, Sienna," Lucian interrupted, his voice dropping into a raspy whisper. "I do them because I don't want a broken captive in my house. I want you fierce. I want you angry. Because an angry woman stays sharp—and in this house, you will need to be sharp to survive." He reached out, his long fingers gently catching a strand of her auburn hair and tucking it behind her ear. His touch was surprisingly tender, contrasting violently with the ruthless aura surrounding him. "Go to your room, little bird," he whispered. "Rest. Tomorrow, your real lessons begin." Before she could process his words, Lucian turned and walked away toward his private security wing, leaving Sienna standing alone on the grand staircase, her heart hammering wildly in her chest.
