Chapter 2

It’s been a week since that day and the tension between the two people was so thick it could be cut with a knife. They went about the day as usual but they never so much as said a word to each other. Moreover, Caleb left their room and switched to the guest room, he thought it would be best for their situation. Right now in the study, “sir, the young miss’s fiancé is getting engaged today to her sister” this news was told to Caleb by his right hand man, Malcom. ‘so he really went ahead with this’, Caleb thought to himself both disgusted and pleased. Disgusted because he had found out three years ago that Brett(the fiancé) was already in a relationship with Skylar’s younger sister, she was the one he loved but only got engaged to Skylar for she was the oldest and most likely the heir to her family’s fortune, but now that she was out of the way, there was nothing keeping him from his woman, if only he had known sooner that not only will she not get a dime from her parents, she also will not inherit anything, since when was it heard were an illegitimate child could inherit anything. But on the other hand, he was pleased because if Skylar got to know about all this, to know about all that has been hidden from her, she will probably stay with him on her own will, and hopefully fall in love with him. ‘maybe it was time for him to let her free’ he thought to himself, he had protected her long enough, and since she does not appreciate him, he will let her go, but only for today. “bring Skylar to me” he told Malcom, causing the poor man to stare at him confused, but eventually bowed and left.

At the very moment, Skylar wanted to find a chance to talk to Caleb, she had time to think this past week, and finally decided to make peace with him, to find a way for them to compromise for each other. She realised that he will never let her leave, but she also wanted to have a life of her own, she had dreams she wanted to accomplish, a family she longed to see, and a friend she wants to talk to, she was tired of this four walls. She had finally gained the courage to go too him when a knock came from her door. “come in” she said and the door opened and in came Malcom. She couldn’t help but smile. In this whole house, this was the only person she was close to, he may be as cold as his boss, but he was the only one who spoke to her, literally, everyone else either bows or nod their heads at her. “the boss wants to see you, can we please go to him right away” he bowed at her and she smiled. “let’s go right away then, I was already going to him, I want to talk to him.” She said leading the way to the office. “is he in a good mood Malcom, I have something to ask him” she said looking at the man besides him, and let out a little laugh when his body stiffened. “don’t worry, I don’t plan to ask to leave, I just want to reach a compromise with him, maybe he can let me go to school, I’m tired of studying at home” she told him with a smile and he relaxed and nodded. This was why she loved him, even though he never talked to her unless necessary, he always gave her a reply and paid attention to what she was saying. In no time, they were already at the study, and Malcom opened the door for her. Once inside, she looked at the man who was reading document on his desk and couldn’t help but wonder why he chose to keep her when he could have any girl he wanted, with his charm and power, girls would readily throw themselves at his feet, she really could not understand why he chose her.

“I’m here, Malcom said you wanted to talk to me” she said body stiff, standing by the door, for security, in case he goes crazy, no matter how hard she tried, she could never overcome her fear for this man. Caleb finally faced her after signing his last document. “I’ll let you go out today, do whatever you want, meet your family, your so called fiancé, and catch up. But you have to be back by midnight, and take Malcom with you” he said in a single breath and Skylar thought she heard it wrong. “what did you say? I can leave?!?!” Skylar asked curious, she couldn’t believe it, she thought she heard it all wrong, so she was stunned. A man who has never let her leave for three whole years, suddenly let her leave on his own accord, he must have been up to something. “what are you up to Caleb, you never let me out of your sight for three years and now you want me to leave just like that” she asked both curious and afraid to find out. “I protected you for three years, and for you that was never enough, you always wanted to leave, you hate me, so go. Go back to the life you have always wanted to return to” he said before calling Malcom to drag her away. ‘from now on, I’ll give you the same treatment you have been giving me’ Caleb thought to himself as he watched her enter the car and drive away.

In the car. “can you take me to see my family first Malcom” Skyla said barely hiding her excitement, she gets to see her family for the first time in three years, nothing can explain the excitement she is feeling. “but why did he let me go all of a sudden? Can you tell me Malcom?” she asked suddenly curious, for three years he never let her leave, and suddenly, he just lets her go, the must be something he is planning. She could help feeling that there was something wrong with the whole process. “I can’t say, all I can tell you is that you have broken a very strong man, and you may realise that, you already had everything you always wanted, but now it will be too late” Malcom said plainly, with no emotion. After some time, they arrived at their destination. “we are here, good luck” Malcom said as he opened the door for her. She could help feeling that something was wrong because of that comment.

The first thing she registered was the balloons, the red carpet and the music that was playing, it was evident that a party was being held here. She went inside and straight to the ballroom, her family always holds every event in this place. She ran so hard, she wanted to tell them that she could spend the day with them, she wanted to have lunch with them, play music, dance, all the crazy things she always did with them. She ran past all the servants that were walking around the house and straight to the room, but when she got there, she got the shock of her life, just outside the door, there was a poster, “Brett and Ariana’s engagement”. She couldn’t believe it, this party was for the engagement between her fiancé and younger sister?!? She refused to believe it. Brett loved her and she loved him, there was no way he could get together with her sister, besides, Ariana would never betray her this way. She refused to believe any of it. It may have been an arrange marriage but she was sure Brett loved her. She made her way inside to see ask her parents why they would mislead people this way, there was no way they would do this.

When she got inside, she stood rooted to the spot, she couldn’t believe her yes. Her fiancé and little sister were exchanging rings, with happy smiles on their faces. After they exchanged rings, Brett Whispered something to Adriana and her face went beet red, then she buried it in his chest. A moment later it was announced that the couple would love to have their first dance, everyone cleared and made room for them to dance. They moved beautiful across the floor, in perfect sync, they would laugh and kiss a little in the middle all the way until the song ended. “they look so good together, they were made for each other”, “I head Brett was going to be engaged to thee older sister, but she backed out of it”, “she is a fool for blowing off such a perfect man, but he sure is lucky, I heard that that girl is the illegitimate daughter of Mathew, a stain to his marriage. Even if he had chosen her, he would have lost out”, “where did you hear that?”, “madam Stone told my mom. Apparently her husband cheated on her, and that was how the girl came by”, “I guess he is lucky then. The Wild family would never accept an illegitimate child; it would reflect bad on their reputation”. this was the discussion by a group of girls that were standing beside her. Skylar stood there frozen, filled with mixed emotions. These girls just called her an illegitimate child, that must be wrong, she was their biological daughter, her parents loved her, this was all a lie. She refused to believe that what they were saying was true.
