Chapter 7

"There seems to be a mix-up somewhere," Melanie hissed, forcefully shoving me aside and sprinting up the stairs. I paid her no mind and swiftly fled from the house, racing towards the hospital. Upon entering, I found Leo seated on the bed, undergoing examinations by the doctor. When our eyes met, a moment of silence hung in the air. Nervousness gripped me, but I pressed on. "You must be Olive," the doctor greeted me with a smile. "Yes," I replied. "I would like to speak with you privately," he said, leading the way out of the room as I followed closely behind. With each step, I could feel Leo's gaze piercing into my back, leaving me to wonder what thoughts were swirling in his mind. The doctor guided me to his office, and I took a seat, anxiously awaiting the impending revelation. His worried expression spoke volumes, foretelling the news I dreaded. "It's a miracle that your husband regained consciousness," he finally broke the silence. "Thank you, doctor," I managed to utter. His head drooped low, and with a heavy sigh, he delivered the devastating blow. "I'm afraid the accident has left him crippled, and he will never be able to use his legs again in this lifetime." I nearly tumbled from my seat, but somehow managed to maintain my composure, though the doctor remained eerily calm. "Could you please repeat that?" I stammered, unsure if I had heard correctly the first time. "I understand this is incredibly difficult to accept, but there is nothing that can be done. Apart from his legs, he is in good condition." Leo's preference would be death over being crippled, and I was well aware of that. He was a proud man, and a sudden disability would plunge his world into darkness. My heart ached for him, but I had no control over the situation. Now that he was awake, it wouldn't be long before he demanded divorce papers. I feared my time here was limited. Leaving the doctor's office, I made my way to see Leo. He was on his phone when I entered, but immediately froze as if he had seen a ghost. I also noticed that he couldn't meet my gaze freely. Leo put his phone aside and gestured for me to sit next to him, speaking in a warm tone that made me question if his eyes were functioning perfectly. Perhaps he mistook me for Melanie? "I'm Olive," I reminded him. He chuckled, "I'm not blind, Olive. I can see that. Take a seat." "Fine," I reluctantly complied with his request, and he wrapped his arms around my waist, causing me to freeze. "What's happening?" I asked, while Leo buried his face in my stomach. "Thank you," he whispered. While Leo was unconscious, I read him stories every day to keep him company, sometimes sharing bits about myself, thinking he wouldn't remember. "For what?" I asked, his sudden apology startling me. It was always hard to decipher Leo's true intentions. "You're the one who took care of me all this time," he replied. I was shocked that he knew. "Did the doctor tell you that?" He moved away from me and laid his head on my lap. In the past, I used to feel a flutter of excitement whenever he touched me, but now I just wanted him to be far away from me. Despite this, I chose to remain still, eager to hear what he had to say next. "No, I heard everything you said. You used to tell me stories, didn't you?" I was too shocked to respond, but Leo wasn't finished speaking. "My favorite is the one where you were being chased by a dog in a graveyard. I couldn't stop laughing." He said with a cheerful tone. I felt embarrassed, remembering the time when I ran out of stories and ended up talking about myself, even revealing my unrequited love to him. Feeling ashamed, I looked away, but Leo placed his hand on mine and said, "You're the reason why I'm here right now, Olive. On the days when I wanted to give up, your stories kept me going. I found myself eagerly waiting to hear more, longing to hear your voice." "Leo-" I began to speak, but he stared into my eyes desperately, as if searching for my soul. "I know I haven't been the best husband, and it took me a while to realize what an amazing woman you are. But you have proven yourself to me, and I would like it if you stayed." Bitterly, I looked away and replied, "I can't." My mind was already made up. How dare he ask me to stay? Doesn't he remember the years of torment I endured with him? All I did was love this man, and yet it seemed like my love would never be enough, no matter how hard I tried. And now, when I finally decided to step back, he had the audacity to ask me to stay. "That decision is not yours to make, Olive. As long as I am present, you will not be going anywhere. You are obligated to return to the pack with me and resume your responsibilities as the luna." Anger surged through me, and I abruptly stood up, pushing him away. "You can't just kick me out whenever you want and then expect me to stay. You pressured me for a divorce, Leo. Don't you remember how badly you wanted it back then?" "I am still the same person, nothing has changed, the scar remains." It made no sense for him to suddenly change his mind based on a few stories. He reached out for me again, but I swatted his hand away. "I have already signed the divorce papers. Nothing you say will change my mind. Remember, Melanie is still waiting." The thought of his affair with her ignited a fiery rage within me, and I refuse to subject myself to such pain again. At the mention of Melanie's name, I noticed a flicker in his eyes, but he quickly concealed it and said, "I'm sorry, Olive. If you give me one last chance, I will prove to you that true love exists."
